Personality
DISLIKES: Injustice, prison, narrow thinking, being bored, purely theoretical things, early mornings, remote places, too many rules, being looked at funny by parents in playgrounds.
LIKES: Having fun, getting away with things, fooling people, his friends and family, money, things with a practical point, cities, drawing pictures, tea with so much sugar in that it all gathers in a lump at the bottom, kids.
BAD HABITS: Lying, stealing, breaking the law, not bothering about things that don't interest him
GOOD HABITS: Being friendly and charming, taking opportunities, owning up to what he's done, always seeing the funny side
WEAKNESSES: Can't resist something that seems like an opportunity for gain, can't stay within the law, is not good at concentrating on things that bore him, is not good at concentrating on academic work, cannot perform most advanced spells as he dropped out of school at sixteen
STRENGTHS: Is easily likeable, good at lying and conning people, good at practical tasks, quick and clever, takes information in easily, learns fast, reacts quickly, adapts easily, is loving and loyal to family and friends, always sticks up for the underdog
PERSONALITY: Jake is a thief and a con-artist. Most of the time, he manages not to get caught, but when he is caught, he takes it with a philosophical c’est la vie attitude that is similar to his attitude to life. Not that he can’t get angry and indignant about things, or that he won’t try and talk himself out of a situation if he thinks there’s a chance of it working, but generally, he knows that shit happens and there’s very little you can do to stop it; if it isn’t one thing, it’ll be another. When he’s properly caught, he’ll come quietly, and he’ll do it with a rueful grin and a self-deprecating joke that makes even some law-enforcers feel kindly towards him.
His motivation in breaking the law is usually to make money. He is quite materialistic, and dislikes not having enough of things. It’s not that he’s lazy; he’s perfectly prepared to work hard, both at honest and dishonest work, but if he sees an opportunity to make more, he’ll take it, especially if it’s easy. He doesn’t really understand why anyone wouldn’t.
However, there is honour among thieves, and he’d never steal from his friends, or con them too badly. Neither would he ever knowingly take from someone who had less than him. He is a big supporter of the underdog, and hates injustice. He’d much rather be sent down for something he did, than see someone else get sent down for something they didn’t do.
He has a very sharp brain and wit, hence his being sorted into Ravenclaw, and he is very quick to spot opportunity. When he chooses to engage, he learns quickly and well. However, he is not an academic type at all, and will not work at anything unless he is either very interested in it, or sees some benefit in it for himself. Having said that, when it comes to life skills and general knowledge about the world, he is always open to new facts and ideas, and is very quick to adjust his ideas and plans to anything new that comes his way. He is alert and on the ball, and reacts quickly. He sees education as going far beyond what you learn in school.
His general persona, however, is warm, friendly and charming. He always has a witty comment or a joke, and tended to be the class clown at school. He is always prepared to laugh at himself, and doesn’t usually take life too seriously. He is very loyal, and essentially kind, and will always be there for the people he loves. Sometimes, he wonders why he wasn’t sorted into either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, then he thinks that his ability to lie, and his ambition for making money are too Slytherin, so Ravenclaw must have been a compromise. Then he decides that it really doesn’t matter that much anyway, since school was a long time ago. He sees the benefit of being on good terms with as many people as possible, and he’ll steal your wallet, and then buy you a coffee with the money from it.

MIRROR OF ERISED: To be somebody's role model
VERITASERUM:
While Jake has no problems at all with stealing as such, he hates stealing from someone with less than him, or someone who is somehow more vulnerable than him. When he was ten years old, some of his friends dared him to go into the house of a slightly batty old lady who lived near them, and steal the large fluffy toy dog she kept in her window. Jake did this, but later the same day, he saw her standing helplessly on her garden path, crying about it. He took the dog back, admitted that he had taken it, and apologised. It’s the first and only time he has ever willingly returned something he stole.
He has a two-year-old daughter. All his Muggle friends know this, but not a single soul in the Wizarding World does.
He keeps a picture of his daughter under his pillow. He started this habit whilst in prison, and he hasn’t stopped now that he’s out.
He makes light of it, but the last year, the one he spent in Azkaban, was the worst of his life, and he is genuinely scared of ever ending up back there.
BOGGART: Something happening to his daughter, or the mother of his daughter.
DEMENTOR: The days around a couple of months after he was sent to Azkaban, when the year seemed to stretch out ahead of him, and he didn’t know how he was going to keep going to the end of it.
PATRONUS: The day his daughter first impulsively called him Daddy. It only happened a few weeks ago. However, he cannot cast a Patronus, because he didn’t stay in school long enough to learn how.

HISTORY: Jacob Nathaniel Gullane was born into an extremely ordinary family in an extremely ordinary small town in the north west of England. His family lived at the nicer end of an estate with a bad reputation, his mother worked part time as an admin assistant in a Primary School, and his father was a security guard in a factory. Jake was the baby of the family; he had an older brother, Dan, and an older sister, Amber, and while they never exactly had all the money they could have wanted, they weren’t on the poverty line.
His parents split up when he was three, so his memories of the time when they all lived together are distant, and mostly involve his parents arguing. However, he didn’t have a bad childhood; his family was as loving, argumentative and dysfunctional as most families are. Money was always tight, and from an early age, Jake was on the look out to make ready cash; as a small child it was by trying to sell his toys to passers by at his front gate, although his methods changed as he got older. He fought a lot with his brother and sister, particularly his brother, although they all loved each other really, and would support each other from outsiders. There were a lot of other children on the estate, so he was never lacking friends. As he got older, he was allowed to play out on the street with them, and they all roamed around as a gang, on bikes.
His early pieces of magic were small and nobody really noticed them. His friend’s new shiny bike somehow ended up in Jake’s family’s shed, but nobody believed that opportunistic little Jake Gully hadn’t simply stolen it, and he was grounded for a month. On another occasion, he was climbing trees and an older boy pushed him out. He ought to have broken both his legs the way he landed, but he was unhurt; his friends who were watching said that it was like he bounced, and this sort of thing happened quite often, leading Jake to gain the reputation of being born lucky when it came to avoiding physical injury. The older boy who had pushed him, however, stepped onto a branch that broke, fell down and broke his wrist, but Jake was never suspected to have anything to do with it.
When the strange man appeared on his doorstep with a letter from a school called Hogwarts, therefore, Jake’s mother laughed him out the door. However he returned for the next three days in a row, until she let him in and listened to him. By the end of that conversation, she was pale and shaking, and had to sit down with a cup of tea. Jake was initially extremely suspicious, and resisted being sent away to some posh school, where he was sure everyone would look down on him, but the lure of learning magic eventually persuaded him.
However, Jake was never really cut out for school. He was already known in the neighbourhood as a troublemaker, although one that nobody could help liking, and his Primary School teachers despaired of him. None of them could do anything with him; it wasn’t that he was unpleasant or rude, he just wasn’t interested in learning anything unless he could see how it benefited him; the rest of the time, he clowned around and made the rest of the class laugh. If you could interest him, though, he would show a razor sharp brain and an excellent ability to adapt to new ideas and ways of thinking. He was the same at his new school. Despite being sorted into Ravenclaw, he would only ever work at the things that interested him. He liked subjects such as Charms and Transfiguration, and disliked most others, although he would occasionally try in potions, depending on what the potion was that they were trying to make. He was also a natural on a broom, despite being Muggleborn. Surprisingly, he also thrived in Divination, although his teacher never realised that he was making everything up; Jake’s career as a con artist had begun.
He continued to try and make money wherever possible. Compared to a lot of the other students, he had very little money, and he disliked this; he wanted to be able to afford expensive things. However, he never bothered to try and keep within the law with his money-making schemes; he would sell anything to anyone, and was not above conning people, or selling things which did not belong to him. However, despite this, he had a lot of friends. He was funny and charming and gregarious, and the kind of guy most people can’t really help liking, for he was entirely open about his dishonest ways. He was also something of a ladies’ man; no girlfriend ever lasted long, but he always tried to part on good terms with them; there are rarely any hard feelings with Jake.
He never intended to stay at school beyond 5th Year. In the Muggle world, sixteen is the school leaving age, and all his Muggle friends were leaving, or at the most going into vocational courses at college, and although they had mostly (not entirely) got over taking the piss out of him for the mysterious scholarship he had gained to boarding school, he felt that staying at school beyond sixteen would be too much. The fact that nobody else in the Wizarding World seemed to be doing that did not matter to him.
At the end of his 5th Year, however, his world changed. At that time, he was going out with (although on an extremely casual, not entirely exclusive basis) a Muggle girl named Emma who was part of his home crowd, and when he arrived home for the summer, after sitting his OWLs (at least, the ones he turned up for), it was to be greeted with the momentous news that she was pregnant. Both Emma and Jake were the types of people to take what life flings at them fairly philosophically, and after the first shock and panic, they were both agreed that although they didn’t really want to spent the rest of their lives together, they did want to keep the baby. They were both sixteen; Emma had also left school and had an apprenticeship as a hairdresser, something she considered a very good career; in fact, she considered herself more or less an adult, and really just about ready to be a mother. Jake was less sure about his readiness to be a father, but at the same time, the life inside her was his baby, and that was something amazing.
It was something amazing he needed to hang onto in the next few years. Jake’s ideas for earning a living became no more honest after he dropped out of school. He found a job working in Florean Fortescue’s, but he had plenty of sidelines. He had all kinds of useful little skills he had picked up along the way, such as a talent that almost amounted to genius for making magical forgeries. He also sold magically enhanced items to Muggles; not tricks to fool them, but gadgets with magical labour-saving devices built in an the like. Of course, the magic rarely lasted beyond a fortnight, but by that time, Jake was long gone. The things he had learnt at school, he had learnt well, sometimes to a higher level than 5th Year level, and this stood him in good stead; he was excellent at making Polyjuice Potion, casting disillusionment charms, multiplying objects, and transfiguring things to look like something else. He began to make money, and by the time his daughter was born, he was doing reasonably well. He and Emma had split up but remained friends, and she knew that not everything he did was honest; she disapproved of this, and would often lecture him about it. They called their daughter Skye (Emma’s choice) and Jake adored her from the moment she was born. He would do anything for her, and would protect her to the ends of the earth.
It was at this point that he breached the Secrecy Act and told Emma that he was a wizard. He figured that she had a right to know, as it was only too likely that Skye would also be a witch. All things considered, she took it quite well; it only took about three hours to convince her that he wasn’t lying or mad, and in the process, she only threw two things at his head, and only one of them hit him (luckily, it was phone, not the kitchen knife).
However, shortly after his eighteenth birthday, the authorities caught up with him, and he didn’t have a leg to stand on. He pled guilty to all charges (Jake always had been honest about his dishonesty) and was sent to Azkaban for a year; his daughter was then almost a year old. Emma, of course, being a Muggle, could not visit him in Azkaban, but she loyally wrote to him and sent him photographs of Skye as she grew, and it was this that kept him going whilst in prison.
He got out in December 2022, and has spent the last two months living in the Muggle world, not using magic, and trying to build up a relationship with his now two-year-old daughter. However, with Emma’s support, he is now ready to rejoin the wizarding world, get back in touch with the friends he has lost touch with, and perhaps even to start living a more honest life (maybe).
