PERSONALITY: Luna has always been “the weird one” – the nickname Loony didn’t start out as a positive thing. She is quiet and reserved most of the time, and she has a way of dealing with any manner of stressful situations that tends to unnerve people. She’s inadvertently given many people reason to avoid her over the years, but she’s never let it get her down. She has a few close friends, and a family that she loves deeply, and she’s always been content with nothing but that.
The only time Luna gets worked up about anything in a negative way is when people criticize or threaten her family. She has always put the happiness and safety of others before her own; she is fiercely protective of the ones she loves, even if she’s no good at keeping herself out of harm’s way, and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind. That being said, she can sometimes be a little too honest. She doesn’t always think though what she says, and she often doesn’t realize the impact that her words might have on others: she is never cruel, but some of the things she says do cause awkwardness and embarrassment.
Despite all appearances, Luna is very down-to-earth. She is realistic, even while she is inherently optimistic, and she is able to see all the sides of any given situation. She is extremely intelligent, and a very good problem-solver. She is also extremely dedicated, something that has yielded both positive and negative results. Once she starts something, she won’t rest until it’s finished well – sometimes in the literal sense that she simply forgets to sleep at night. She’s much stronger than she might seem, magically and emotionally. She can handle almost anything life throws at her, and she keeps a positive outlook no matter what.
ON THE BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS
Incharacterextras
WAND: Willow and Pegasus wing feather, 11 ½ inches. She got the wand from Mr. Ollivander just after they were both rescued from the Malfoy Manor, which makes it very special to her – more so than most wands would be to their owners.
BROOMS: A slightly worn-out Moontrimmer that she got for her sixteenth birthday. She prefers riding thestrals to flying on broomsticks because it’s more personal and exciting, but she often uses her broom for little business-type trips.
PET(s):
Mandy: A crup
Hitchcock: Lysander’s salamander
Mr. Invisible: A thestral that Luna found a few years ago, who adopted himself into the family.
Cassiopeia: Luna’s name for the Re’em that lives a couple of miles from their house.
Miaow: Lysander’s owl that he takes to Hogwarts
Reno: Lorcan’s kitten

WHERE THE CITY SLEEPS
Relationships
AMORTERIA: Cedar bark, pine needles, and sage
MIRROR OF ERISED: As cliché as it sounds, her greatest desire at this point is to see her sons happy. She hopes that they grow up well, without the kind of tragedies she had to endure, that they do worthwhile things with their lives, and that she is around to see them start families of their own (if that’s what they want to do, of course).
VERITASERUM: Even though she knows it was all for the best, and she wouldn’t trade her current family for anything, a part of her still misses her relationship with Neville. She’s also had frequent nightmares for the majority of her life; in her early years, they were about her mother; not long after those faded away, the Second Wizarding War put new horrors into her mind. She hasn’t even told Rolf about these nightmares, for fear of worrying him too much.
BOGGART: Something horrible happening to one of her sons.
DEMENTOR: Watching Dobby the house-elf die after rescuing her and many other prisoners from the Malfoy Manor.
PATRONUS: The night after all of the reconstruction work on Hogwarts castle was done, she and Neville – who she’d just begun dating – went up to the newly rebuilt Astronomy tower and spent the night watching the stars and talking about the future. It was the happiest and most hopeful she’d felt since she’d been taken prisoner the previous December, and she still looks back on that night fondly and gratefully, because it really brought her back from the harshness and negativity that the war had started to infect her with.
AND I’M THE ONLY ONE

FATHER: Xenophilius Lovegood: born 28 March, 1955 - 67. Editor for the highly eccentric wizarding magazine, The Quibbler. Always a free spirit and generally a little scatter-brained, Xenophilius is nonetheless a dedicated father, and was a dedicated husband in his time. He likes to think the best of people, but the years have made him skeptical – he’s very thankful to have his Luna around to remind him that there’s good in the world.
MOTHER: Cordelia Lovegood, nee Sheehan: born 7 July, 1957 - deceased. A freelance experimental witch, she had a tendency to get in over her head that led to her untimely death at 33. She was a kind, loving woman, and eccentric as any Lovegood.

HISTORY: Luna grew up on the outskirts of Ottery St. Catchpole, near the top of a hill overlooking the surrounding marsh and forest. The Lovegoods generally kept to themselves, despite the nearness to other wizarding families, and were an extremely close-nit trio. Xenophilius and Cordelia both worked from home, so the family was able to spend a great deal of time together. They did a lot of traveling throughout Luna’s childhood, generally following up on some lead Xenophilius had gotten on some little-known magical species.
Luna grew up slightly closer to her mother than her father, and was a little like an apprentice or assistant. She would run around gathering different stones or potion ingredients, and keep her mother company as she worked through a new spell or devised a potion for someone. In the spring of 1990, Cordelia was working on a particularly complex new spell that involved the use of a powerful potion she had developed herself to improve confidence. She’d made the potion several times before without any issues, but she mixed up the amounts of two of its ingredients – the result was that, after working the four steps of the spell that should have had a positive effect on the appearance and aura of the room, the ceiling above her crumbled and a strange jet of light erupted from the cauldron, smashing a mirror and a bookshelf before bouncing back to Cordelia and hitting her full on in the chest. Her ribs were shattered upon impact, which would have made for a slow and painful death had a large chunk of the ceiling not fallen on her head and knocked her out cold. Luna was, incredibly, unhurt; she rushed to her mothers’ side, but at only nine years old she had no idea what to do. She called frantically for her father, but by the time he arrived it was much too late.
Luna and Xenophilius both sank into serious bouts of depression: Xenophilius locked himself in his study for days, and Luna took to wandering the area surrounding their home. She spent hours on end in the forest at the base of their little hill, and it was then that she began to develop her deep affinity to animals, magical and otherwise. She had an uncanny ability to develop a report with them, and she found that she was able to talk to animals and unload her grief in a way that she never wanted to do around her father, but that she desperately needed to. She came across a small family of thestrals and was enthralled by them, having never seen them before – of course, she had no idea then why she hadn’t been able to see them until that spring. She returned to visit the thestrals several times a day over the following week, and was really able to come to terms with her mothers’ death.
She began spending time in the house again, and – having dealt with her own grief – started pulling her father around. They were much closer after that, and Xenophilius doted endlessly on Luna. They stopped traveling as often, not having Cordelia’s supplemental income, but still spent most of their time together. Luna brought her father into the forest with her to introduce him to the thestrals, and discovered he couldn’t see them – that was when she found out what they were, and that they could only be seen by people who’d witnessed death, and therefore had a very negative reputation. She had a huge soft spot for the creatures, and continued visiting them every so often, but generally left her father behind.
In the summer of 1992, Luna received her Hogwarts acceptance letter. Her father seemed very pleased, but she could tell he was saddened: with Luna away at school, he would be completely alone in their house. Still, she was excited to go to Hogwarts, and simply resolved to write to her father as often as she could. She went off to school that September, and was sorted into Ravenclaw – much to the pride of her father, whose entire family had been full of Ravenclaws. She was happy with her placement, and she loved having the chance to really learn magic, in a more concrete way than watching her mother work when she was young.
From the moment she got to Hogwarts, though, Luna was an outsider. People saw her dreamy, thoughtful demeanor and her affinity for the unconventional, and wrote her off as crazy. She became widely known as “Loony” Lovegood, a nickname she has since adopted fondly, and was primarily avoided. But she was used to going about things on her own, and took it all with a grain of salt. She stayed in touch with her father, and spent her time either reading in her dorm or exploring the Forbidden Forest. Her life continued in this matter until midway through her third year in school, when she befriended Ginny Weasley. They had the same Care of Magical Creatures class, and were united in their support of Harry Potter. Luna, always quick to believe the best in people, was convinced that Harry had been chosen for the tournament by accident; Ginny, naturally suspicious thanks to the trauma of her first year, believed it was some kind of conspiracy. In any event, it got them talking, and Luna found herself with a true friend for the first time in her Hogwarts career.
In her fourth year, Luna was part of the secret organization Dumbledore’s Army. She had already been close to Ginny, but the D.A. gave her a feeling of belonging that she’d never really had. At the end of that year, she accompanied all of her newfound friends – Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville – to the Ministry of Magic to save Harry’s godfather, who Harry believed was being tortured by Voldemort in the Department of Mysteries. She fought hard in the following battle, which was one of the first times she really showed her fiery determination. Her fifth year was for the most part uneventful, and she deeply missed the D.A. meetings, but the friendships she formed through them stayed strong. She passed the year by commentating at Quidditch games and studying hard for her O.W.L.s, but all the while there were definitely the rumblings of an impending war.
When Luna returned for her sixth year at Hogwarts, it was obvious immediately that things had made a turn for the worse; Harry, Ron, and Hermione were conspicuously missing, the widely-hated Severus Snape had taken over for Dumbledore as headmaster, and two new professors were appointed that were rumored to be Death Eaters. In that year, she grew much closer to Neville Longbottom. They were drawn to each other at first because they were both outsiders, and they stuck together because of the horrible state the school was falling into. She posed the idea to him of reforming Dumbledore’s Army, and he stepped up; he became a leader for the entire student body, she was the positive force they all needed, and Ginny – as the third leader, and the most accomplished witch – took charge of all the defensive training. They kept up the resistance, and did the best they could to help every student in the school.
When Christmas holidays came around, every student was eager to get home to their families, and Luna was no exception. When she got to King’s Cross Station, however, it was not her father waiting for her on the platform – it was two strange men (one of whom she was sure she recognized from that battle at the Ministry) dressed in dark cloaks. Knowing that the station was full of innocent Muggles, and afraid that they would harm her father, she didn’t resist when they took her. They brought her to the Malfoy manor, where she was thrown into the cellar where Mr. Olivander was being kept. She had her wand taken away from her the moment they grabbed her, and she learned within a few days that she’d been taken as leverage against her father, who was printing stories in support of Harry Potter. She was tortured continuously, as they believed she, too, might have information on Harry’s whereabouts, and they knew for a fact she was directly involved in the rebellion at Hogwarts. Despite more encounters with Bellatrix Lestrange than she could count, Luna never gave in – she never betrayed Neville or Ginny, and she didn’t ever know anything about Harry or the others. After a few weeks, she was joined by Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dean Thomas, and a goblin named Griphook. Luna felt very conflicted at the sight of her friends: on the one hand, she was happy to see them again; on the other hand, the sight of them meant they’d gotten captured, and that the torture would likely be shifted to one of them.
Within a couple of days, though, the house-elf Dobby appeared and rescued them all from the house. There was a terrible struggle, and Dobby wound up with Bellatrix’s dagger in his chest. He died just as they all reached Shell Cottage, a safe house for the Order of the Phoenix; the rest of them were relatively unscathed. His death haunts her to this day, because she knows he died to save all of them. It was one of the first real tragedies of the war that she witnessed firsthand, and it was what really began to rob her of some of her hopeful innocence. She remained at Shell Cottage with Dean, Bill, and Fleur, even when Harry, Ron, and Hermione went off to continue their search for horcruxes. She was sent a replacement wand by Mr. Ollivander in gratitude for her company and positive influence during their time at the Malfoy manor. She’s had the same wand ever since, and it’s very special to her. She practiced with it day in and day out while at the Shell Cottage, and found that – once it got used to her – it worked even better with her than her old wand had.
Once she and Dean had settled into a vague rhythm of life, about a week had passed since the Hogwarts term had restarted. It wasn’t safe for either of them to return to the school, and there was no way for Luna to return home: she learned from Bill and Fleur that her house had been destroyed and her father had been arrested. She and Dean, who was in hiding because of his Muggle-born status, stayed at Shell Cottage. Luna sent messages to Ginny and Neville with a code they had developed using the fake Galleons Hermione had developed for the D.A. assuring them that she was alive and safe, and telling them that she had seen Harry, Ron, and Hermione. She did her best to stay in touch with them, but from everything she could tell the “security” measures at Hogwarts were getting stricter and stricter by the day, and within a month she had fallen out of contact with everyone at the school. It was difficult, biding her time at Shell Cottage – it wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy the company of Bill, Fleur, and Dean, but she hated the idea of not being able to help her dad or her friends. She kept herself relatively sane by painting, reading, and practicing magic.
Finally, in early May of 1998, she received another message from Neville: Harry, Ron, and Hermione had arrived at Hogwarts. She and Dean went to tell Bill and Fleur at almost the same time, and – once the couple had disapparated to alert the rest of the Order – traveled by floo powder to the Hog’s Head, where there was a secret entrance to the castle. Once at the school, they were met with enthusiasm by the entire student resistance (plus the trio). After much pestering, they were able to get Harry to reveal his purpose for being there: to look for some Ravenclaw artifact. Right away, Luna thought of Ravenclaw’s lost diadem, which Harry also thought was a likely item. She led him to the Ravenclaw common room, so he could see what the diadem looked like on a statue of Rowena Ravenclaw. On the way out of the common room, they were met by Alecto Carrow, one of the two Death Eaters hired as teachers that year. Luna was able to stun her, but not until after she’d notified other Death Eaters of Harry’s presence. From that point on, The Battle of Hogwarts was in full swing. Her memories of that night are very disjointed, coming in flashes of duels and visions of death and destruction. The fighting went on into the early hours of the morning; it was, and remains to this day, one of the longest nights of Luna’s life.
In the aftermath of the battle, Luna was able to separate herself from the hundreds of grieving students and Order members and catch up with Neville over a walk through the disheveled grounds. Within half an hour, Luna’s father had arrived; as dementors had flocked to Hogwarts to join in the battle, there had been a mass break out from Azkaban, and Xenophilus had been one of the first to get his bearings back. After saying a quick goodbye to Neville and exchanging addresses with him, Luna went with her father back to their house. Between the two of them, they were able to repair the extensive damage by mid-day. Despite Luna’s exhaustion, she spent the rest of the day telling her dad about everything that had happened since the last time she’d seen him.
A week or two later, Luna got wind of a massive project going on to rebuild Hogwarts; the castle had been practically demolished during the battle, and even with the use of magic it was going to take a fair number of people. She wrote to Neville, and they agreed to meet each other at the school. The reconstruction effort took nearly two months, but it seemed likely that Hogwarts would be open again come September 1st. Over the two months they spent together on the castle, Neville and Luna began dating. Luna returned to Hogwarts for her seventh year, and Neville began studying one-on-one with Professor Sprout so that he could take over for her when she retired, which she did at the end of that term.
After finishing her seventh year, Luna started traveling and doing research for her father. She and Neville kept in touch through frequent owls, but over the next two years they saw very little of each other. In the summer of 2001, Neville was able to go with her to the French countryside, where she was researching Quivering Squinches (frail, shy little creatures with extremely toxic venom that Luna is still convinced would make excellent pets). After two weeks together, they agreed that, while they still cared about each other a great deal, a relationship just wasn’t practical. They remained friends, and eventually attended each others’ weddings.
In early 2003, while doing some work in southern Norway, Luna came across Rolf Scamander. He was a wizarding naturalist, just like she was, and he was handsome, witty, and deeply romantic. Needless to say, they were an instant match. They worked together for a few weeks before they started dating, and in August of that year, Rolf proposed. They had a small, modest ceremony in early December; Ginny was Luna’s maid of honor, since they had always remained very good friends. When, in August of 2004, Ginny got married to Harry, Luna returned the favor and acted as her maid of honor.
In late January of 2006, Luna discovered she was pregnant. She and Rolf settled down in the Scottish countryside, and on September 10th Luna gave birth to twin boys, Lorcan and Lysander. They both took six months off from work to tend to the newborn twins, and for the next several years they alternated traveling and spending time with the boys. As soon as they were old enough to leave home for long periods of time, the family once again took to traveling together a lot, although more often than not, it was Rolf and Lysander doing the traveling while Luna and Lorcan stayed home and took care of their growing menagerie of pets.
When the twins went off to Hogwarts in September of 2016, life was quite lonely for a while. She wrote to the twins often, and sent them frequent care packages. By the time they returned to school after winter holidays, though, Luna had become accustomed to their absence and forgot to write more and more frequently. Since then, life has been for the most part uneventful; something that Luna is, after the utter chaos of her young adult life, is primarily thankful for. She’s very happy with her life, and values her family above all else.
