I WALK THIS EMPTY STREET
Personality
DISLIKES: Large crowds of people, thinking too hard about his past, music that reminds him of his wife, anything hurting his daughter, people who pry.
LIKES: Delving into his family's ancestry, spending time with his daughter, long walks at night, reading, talking people around to his point of view.
BAD HABITS: He's fully aware that he has a very good way with words and often uses this talent to the detriment of others, he values blood purity very highly, he's ridiculously messy and hasn't cleared his study of papers in probably three or four years, he avoids talking about his deeper feelings.
GOOD HABITS: He's infinitely patient with his daughter, he evaluates situations before launching himself into them, he concentrates on important things superbly.
WEAKNESSES: His daughter, blood purity, and his severe allergy to cat fur.
STRENGTHS: Extremely intelligent, a superb public speaker, very supportive to anybody who needs it.
PERSONALITY: Julius is a man naturally inclined to privacy. He is a bit of a mess of contradictions, too - he hates large crowds but adores public speaking, doesn't care greatly about very much at all but would die rather than let anything happen to his daughter, and he seems made of stone but he's been torn apart by the losses he's sustained in the past.
He keeps quiet about what he's really feeling and doesn't even admit his emotions to himself, if he thinks they'll be destructive or painful. In the past he has wandered along the borderline of depression, but he's too focused on living to really risk becoming seriously depressed. He's guarded and detached and cool around everyone but his daughter (and his wife and son before they died), but if you're in trouble and he decides he's in the mood he'll do anything to help you.
He has a spectacular way with words, and he can persuade you to do pretty much anything he wants you to. He has a natural confidence and easy, unforced charisma that all combine to make him a superb public speaker - in fact, were he not so inclined against working for the Ministry (he doesn't think it does its job well enough) he would make a splendid Minister for Magic. As it is he potters along through life, carrying on his research into his family's ancestry, guarding his daughter like a lion (despite being an ex-Slytherin), running his company, and spending a lot of time reading.
He loves books and reading as much as he loves speaking, and one of his greatest pleasures in life is reading to his daughter. Before his son Kavanagh was kidnapped, he loved to read to him as well and Anne would often come up to the nursery late at night and find Julius in an armchair with baby Kavanagh in his arms and a book in his hand, reading to the child, with Laetatia crouched with her ear against the door having been ordered to bed about three hours ago. Julius might put up a distanced front but his family mean the world to him and he'd give absolutely anything to get Kavanagh and Anne back.
He's got the Slytherin tendency to calculate everything before he acts, but some distant Gryffindor ancestor has also left him with the sometimes ability to fly into fits of passionate rage. It takes a lot to really rile him up - usually he's completely unshakeable - but when he does lose it boy will you know about it.

AND I’M THE ONLY ONE
Familyhistory
FATHER: Gilroy Breandan Anglesey - deceased - a blood purist who was fanatical about his family's ancestry, something he has passed on (although in a more diluted form) to his son. Always paid far more attention to Julius' older brother, Italus, and slightly lost it when his only daughter Liana, was killed. He lost his mind completely when Italus was also killed a few years later and died not long after.
MOTHER: Aquilina Callisto Anglesey (nee Syres) - 80 - an extremely insensitive, self-absorbed pureblood with very little time for any of her four children, even after the deaths of her oldest son and only daughter, when she was already well into old age. Cares only for her looks and climbing higher on the social ladder.
WIFE: Anne Eithne Anglesey (nee Aldington) - deceased - Julius and Anne were an arranged marriage but they came to love each other very deeply, especially after the births of their first two children, first a daughter and then four years later a son. However, when their son was kidnapped Julius could do nothing but watch as Anne withered away in despair, doing everything to save her but at the same time distracted with the search for Kavanagh, trying to keep Laetatia happy, and keeping his research into the family history running. He was amazed when Anne informed him she was pregnant again, just a few weeks after he had to give up his search for Kavanagh. He thought it was a bad idea trying to replace one child with another but she seemed happier so he lived it with it. It almost destroyed him when she died in childbirth with the baby.
CHILDREN: Laetatia Etaoin - 15 - extremely dyslexic and his only surviving child. Julius would do anything for her and shields her fiercely from the outside world. He refuses to let her know anything about their family history in case she should suffer for it and would die rather than let anything hurt her.
Kavanagh Ionatan - would be 11 - kidnapped when he was fifteen months. Julius had never known grief like it and it was two years before he gave up searching for him and had to accept him as dead. Kavanagh, as the firstborn son, should have been his heir and Julius loved him very deeply.
Jarlath Aindreas - stillborn - a last-ditch attempt by Anne to save her broken heart. Anne had lost too much weight before and then during the pregnancy, and the baby died before it was born.
OTHER IMPORTANT FAMILY: brothers: Italus Lachtna Anglesey (deceased), Kaius Roban Anglesey (50)
sister: Liana Nephele Anglsey (deceased)
sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Marie Anglesey (nee Murphy) (54), Layla Cassidy Anglesey (nee Hunter) (48)
nephews/nieces: Niall Torin Anglesey (26), Nevin Seanán Anglesey (23), Muirín Nessa Anglesey (22), Líadan Una Anglesey (19)
distant family: Jethro Hunter (24), Imogen Hunter (48)
HISTORY: Julius Anglesey was born the second son of wealthy, very traditional pureblood parents, who on his father's side were of distant Italian origin. As the second son, he never had as much attention devoted to him as his older brother, Italus, did. As a result Julius was rather pushed to the side and where Italus was the perfect pureblood son - brilliant at any sport he put his mind to, a genius in the classroom, almost fanatical about his devotion to his family and the Dark Arts - Julius became far quieter and his own considerable talent for reading and speaking went unnoticed amongst his family. By the time Julius was six he had another brother and a little sister, both of whom were almost equally as ignored as Julius unless their mother - a witch interested only in climbing the social ladder further and further - wanted to show off her pretty little daughter.
Growing up, Julius was distanced from most of his family. He was always fascinated by his ancestry and while the other three children would spend long hours outside he preferred to sit inside studying the ancient tomes, even at a relatively young age. Despite this, he was a perfectly acceptable sportsman - although nowhere near as good as Italus or Kaius - and spent enough time outside that he developed into a very healthy, sturdy eleven-year-old to go off to Hogwarts.
He was Sorted into Slytherin like his brother, and did very well in lessons. He was affable and his natural ease at charming people and talking his way around them stood him in good stead for staying out of trouble and becoming relatively popular, although only within his house. He remained solitary and never really became involved with the 'romance' scene when he got old enough because he'd already been warned that Italus was the only Anglesey child who'd have the good fortune to be able to chose his own wife. The other three would have marriages arranged for them to help the family position.
He made the Quidditch team in his fourth year, playing Keeper, and his ability to keep the team calm and watch the match like a hawk would stand him in good stead for later life. He continued throughout school doing very well in lessons and left with lots of very good OWL and NEWT results. After leaving Hogwarts, he travelled to Italy for a year to further his research on the family history, but was summoned back to England to marry Anne Aldington when they were both just nineteen.
At first Julius was very wary around Anne and never sure quite how to deal with her, often acting very coldly towards her and refusing to let her in. However, the longer they were married the more she wormed her way through his defences, and eventually they had the good fortune of falling in love with each other. Anne stayed at home, the perfect pureblood wife, to mind the house and (hopefully) the children when they came along. Julius, meanwhile, went from strength to strength in his job as an editor for a company that specialised in publishing textbooks.
He was absolutely thrilled when Anne announced to him that she was pregnant - by this time he was already thirty-seven and she thirty-five, very old for a pureblood couple to be having their first child, and they were beginning to be worried that they wouldn't be able to have children. Fired up by a desire to be the perfect father to what he hoped would be the perfect pureblood son, he quit his job as an editor and set up his own rival publishing company which specialised in fiction. Nothing gives Julius quite so much pleasure as reading a manuscript and realising that he might just have the next big thing. His company was doing superbly by the time Anne gave birth, and Julius did the atypical thing and stayed with her the whole time the child was being born. It was a difficult birth and the memories still give him nightmares today.
He had expected to be bitterly disappointed if the baby was a girl - as indeed she was - but from the moment he saw her and held her he adored her and didn't regret her sex for a moment. He became even more devoted to his wife and daughter, rushing home from the office after hours of overtime to spend the whole night with them, entranced with the magic of having helped in the creation of a whole, tiny new person.
He and Anne brought her up to be independent and strong, growing worried when she took longer than all of her cousins had done to walk and talk (for Julius' two brothers both had two children apiece by this point), but eventually she learnt and soon became a menace, chattering nineteen-to-the-dozen and being a real terror to get into bed.
The next year Julius' sister, Liana, was killed by an unknown wizard, and the mystery of her murder has never been solved. Julius personally suspects some sort of fanatical group of anti-pureblood extremists or something similar, but the authorities told the family that it was far more likely to be a rape-then-murder case or something. The family mourned for weeks - growing up, Liana was an extremely spoiled brat, but she was also a charming and headstrong young woman with a gift for making people feel happy around her. Julius was eventually dragged out of his sadness by the loving attentions of his wife and daughter, and to this day feels inordinately grateful to them.
He couldn't have been happier the four years later when, in the same week, he bought the publishing company he had originally worked for to add to his own expanding corporation and he and Anne discovered they were expecting another child. The birth of Kavanagh Ionatan Anglesey was a day of wild celebration throughout the Anglesey family, as only two months earlier Julius' older brother, Italus, his father's pride and joy, had been killed by what was thought to be a misfired killing curse, the original target probably some sort of rogue magical creature. The killer has never been found.
Julius was left as the oldest brother of the Anglesey family and heir apparent, but he'd already amassed enough of a fortune to keep his wife and their two children in a life of luxury so instead he passed the inheritance onto the older of Italus' two sons, Niall, without interference from his father who'd gone crazy upon Italus' death and died not long after his son.
Disaster struck the Angleseys again when, at the age of fifteen months, the young Kavanagh was kidnapped from his nursery right under the noses of the entire family and their staff. For three months they clung onto hope that he might be found, but as time went on they lost more and more hope until eventually even Julius had to give up the frantic searching to return to his family. He found them worlds different - Anne was totally immersed in her grief, spending hours sitting in empty, silent rooms oblivious to the world around her. Laetatia, struggling with as-yet-undiagnosed dyslexia - assumed to be pure stupidity - along with the loss of her adored, charming, delightful baby brother and the absence of both parents, had gone from bright and cheerful and naughty to subdued and constantly anxious.
Julius mourned Kavanagh, who should have been his heir, privately in the dead of night and during the day did his best to keep up the spirits of his remaining family. He tried taking Anne to specialists and therapists but nothing seemed to work, and meanwhile he was constantly distracted by his work and the lack of news about Kavanagh and the distressing reports from the strings of governesses he hired that his daughter was nothing short of an imbecile. Overwrought and sleep-deprived, he thought he was hallucinating when a suddenly bright-eyed Anne informed him that she was pregnant again.
As Julius and Laetatia watched with wary eyes, Anne transformed back into almost the woman she'd been before the loss of Kavanagh. They were convinced it was too good to be true, but the image of healing she presented was so convincing that they failed to notice that she was hopelessly unhealthy and underfed. When Anne went into labour, Julius took her straight to St Mungo's despite her insistence on a home birth.
She was in labour for two days, and eventually Julius was banished from the room so the Healers could set to work trying to hurry the process along. He sat outside with Laetatia for a further twelve hours, until a Healer came out and had to tell him that his wife and unborn child were both dead. Anne had been too weak and too underfed to nourish the child properly and the Healers suspected it had been dead at least a couple of weeks. Anne couldn't cope with the rigours of labour and had passed away soon after the Healers perfomed an emergency caesarian to get the child out of her.
At this point, what remained of the world the Anglesey family had slowly begun to rebuild after the loss of Kavanagh fell apart. Julius immersed himself in his work and after a period of ignoring his daughter for fear of the pain if he lost her too, he realised that she was all he had and so he devoted everything he had to her. He took her to a specialist about her "stupidity" and she was diagnosed with severe dyslexia. It was at the same time a relief and disappointment to Julius, since he now knew that she wasn't an idiot - actually, she was quite intelligent when there was no reading or writing involved - but at the same time, she was never going to get better.
He helped her by investigating ways to help her study when she was at Hogwarts and came across the idea of Muggle tape recorders, with which she could record all her notes and then listen to them to learn them rather than having to read them.
The pair were also greatly aided by the friendship of the Hunter family, who had also suffered a great loss - Imogen Hunter's husband, Jethro Hunter's father, had been murdered in mysterious circumstances a couple of years before Kavanagh had been born, and the two families sort of ended up clinging to each other for support. Julius liked Jethro enormously and regularly tried to interest him in his study of the family past, although the Hunters were only related to them by marriage, through Julius' sister-in-law. Jethro was kind and patient and would spend hours with Laetatia, leaving Julius time to quietly carry on searching for Kavanagh. At the same time, he found comfort in helping Imogen to cope. She was even worse than he was, always terrified that she was going to lose someone else close to her. Julius was very much helped by her need of him to be strong, since it helped him stay firm and alive and out of depression.
Julius continued his search for Kavanagh almost automatically, desperate not to believe that his son was dead, and to this day still keeps an eye out for him in the news or something - there is a part of him that refuses to believe his son is gone forever, and occasionally this belief stirs more strongly than usual and he is fired into some sort of (generally pointless) action. He was fiercely proud when Laetatia went into Slytherin with two of the sons of pureblood families the Angleseys were friendly with while the children were growing up, the Malfoys and the Notts. He trusts Scorpius Malfoy to keep an eye on her, but he distrusts Sebastian Nott's wild ways - Sebastian reminds him too much of his dead brother Italus. He spends a lot of time with Imogen Hunter these days too, and is extremely reassured by her insistence that Jethro is keeping an eye on Laetatia for him, which indeed he is.
AND I WALK ALONE

Julius sat quietly in the armchair in the middle of his great library, silent and calm as the day went past outside the window.
He was alternating his gaze between his friend Imogen, curled up on a windowseat with a book and a frown on her face, and the sky outside, hoping for a letter either from Imogen's son Jethro or his daughter Laetatia.
"Imogen," he said all-of-a-sudden, jolting her from her reverie, "Have you seen my spectacles? I'm certain I had them just a second ago."
MY SHADOW IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WALKS BESIDES ME
