Personality

LIKES: Parties, clothes, nice manners, her comfort zone, charming people, shopping, new things, presents, having fun, Christmas.
BAD HABITS: Staying up late, smoking (she's a social smoker), not thinking about other people enough, spending too much money (it doesn't matter too much - she has plenty), bitching about people behind their backs.
GOOD HABITS: Buying people gifts, throwing parties, laughs a lot, has excellent etiquette, table manners etc, is always ladylike.
WEAKNESSES: Not very perceptive to or caring about other people, doesn't understand people who are different from her, has very little will power and cannot resist buying things/parties, hopeless at practical tasks, believes money matters above all else.
STRENGTHS: A charming hostess, extremely well-mannered, quite clever in her way, has a hard-headed, practically-minded side, can be kind and generous, excellent at dancing and has a nice singing voice.
PERSONALITY: Lily is 39 years old, and she is still a spoiled child. A complete butterfly, she loves nothing better than going to parties, hosting parties (and she's excellent at it) and having lovely social occasions. She likes to have a wide social circle, but made up entirely of the 'right' kind of people, ie rich and pureblooded. of those two, however, she considers 'rich' the most important - she will accept anyone, whatever their blood, if they have enough money.
In fact, although she is a terrible snob and her principles seem strong at first, they don't really stand up against any kind of obstacle. She will make abitrary and generalised judgements about life and society, but when she comes up against the issues in reality, her decisions may be entirely different - this is mainly because she finds it difficult to enviasge herself in any situation other than the one she is in. This means that she cannot make realistic judgements on theoretical situations, and also that she finds it hard to imagine herself in another's position. This is not a mental incapacity to do so, but a mental disinclination, and she doesn't tend to practise things she is disinclined to do, meaning that the empathetic part of her brain is sadly unexercised.
She is very lazy at things she doesn't want to do, but she will throw herself energetically into anything she enjoys, and expects those around her to have a similar enthusiasm.
She adores having the money to buy more or less whatever she wants, and she is extremely careless with money. She will splash it around and buy expensive presents, both for herself and for other people. She believes, although more or less subconsciously, that this will buy people's affection.
There is a certain childlike innocence to Lily - she loves to be loved, and always wants to be admired, and at the centre of everyone's attention. She genuinely craves affection, probably as a result of her largely loveless marriage. The idea of enjoying the simple things in life is one that she doesn't understand, but which also oddly appeals to her. She has a tendency to be wistful, and to build up pretty pictures and dreams of herself in a more simple setting, but she never enjoys the reality - it is simply romanticism. At the same time, she has always been attracted to the dark arts. She has never practised them herself or ever wanted to, but she is fascinated by them as something exotic and interesting, just as she is fascinated by the idea of living in happy poverty
Despite this romanticism, Lily also has a ruthlessly practical side. She might dream of romantic poverty, but in reality, she likes luxuries and luxuries need money, and at the end of the day, she generally chooses the route that will allow her to keep up the lifestyle she enjoys.

However, she might find that what it actually showed her was a smaller family unit, tight-knit and loving and surrounded by beauty, not riches.

HISTORY: Lily was born into a comfortably well off, although not absolutely loaaded, pureblood family. She was the younger of two sisters, and when she was three years old, she contracted Dragon Pox and almost died. It was a horrifically worrying time for her parents, and when she pulled through, it seemed like a miracle had taken place. She was weak for some years afterwards, and quite often had minor illnesses. As a result, her parents wrapped her in cotton wool and spoiled her terribly. They were terrified that she was going to get seriously ill again and be taken from them, so they gave her everything she could possibly want, because they wanted to 'make sure she had a good life if it was going to be a short one.' Her sister, although slightly neglected as a result of this (she was two years older, and always a strong sturdy child), accepted it as something necessary and right, but after she went to Hogwarts, Carol discovered that she could be someone who mattered in her own right, and became more distant from Lily.
However, Lily never did get ill again, and by the time she started Hogwarts (where she was sorted into Slytherin), was perfectly strong and healthy, although she never quite grew out of the habit of making a big fuss out of any small illness (of her own - she doesn't like other people to be ill, that's her prerogative).
As she grew up, her mother became concerned by her flighty nature, and tried to reign her in, but trying to be strict with a child you've already spoiled doesn't usually have good results. Lily's relationship with her mother suffered and they frequently clashed horns. In her father's eyes, however, she could do no wrong - she was still his little girl, who he'd thought he was going to lose, and he would always defend her from her mother.
In Slytherin, she quickly came across people with pureblood ideals and an interest in the dark arts, and found an attraction in it, although she never practised dark arts herself. One of her best friends was Cassius Culpepper, a boy she'd grown up with since his mother was her mother's best friend. He had a strong interest in the dark arts, and as the second war approached, he often talked about becoming a Death Eater when he was old enough, although this was a secret from both their families, who might have been purebloods, but were not Voldemort supporters. In fact, not knowing of his dark leanings, Lily's mother approved of Cassius (more than she did of Lily), who was handsome and polite and charming, and also the son of her oldest friend.
After the war, Lily and Cassius started going out. Everyone was delighted and nobody was surprised - it had been predicted since they were children. Lily's parents were rich, but not particularly snobbish, and the fact that Cassius' family didn't have all that much money didn't matter to them (although the fact that he was a pureblood was a plus). However, it did matter slightly to Lily. She worried about how she would survive having to count the pennies and do the housework herself.
Then she met Charles Bass, who was more than ten years older than her and not especially handsome, but extremely rich. He fell for her charms, and Lily cast Cassius off with hardly a second thought. She and Charles were married in a short space of time, although her mother strongly disapproved of the decision, and was bitterly disappointed that she hadn't married Cassius. Her father, of course, supported her, and to him, she pretended to be madly in love with Charles, although her mother knew the truth. Lily saw it as simply a practical decision at the time - money was important, and Cassius didn't have enough. However, a part of her has always been deeply ashamed of it, even more so now that she knows Aggy knows.
Despite breaking up with Cassius, she remained in touch with the rest of the Culpepper family, through her mother, and saw them frequently at her parents' house and at various gatherings.
Lily never particularly wanted children, but neither did she ever consider not having them - as a pureblood woman, her duty was to marry and continue the line, and she never questioned that. However, she wasn't remotely the mothering type. When Aggy was born, she didn't have the first clue of how to cope, and her mother and sister-in-law did a lot of the work. She palmed Aggy off on whoever she could while she enjoyed herself, and as a result, the Culpepper's youngest daughter quite often ended up babysitting the little girl, as did Lily's brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Calista.
By the time Jenny and Rosa came along, Lily had calmed down just a little and took more interest in her children. However, she wanted them to be dolls, not children - she wanted to dress them up and play sweet games with them and show them off. Jenny was the most amenable to this, and as a result, Jenny is Lily's favourite. She finds Aggy difficult to understand (and these days difficult to even talk to) and Rosa difficult to manage.
Her husband's death was something she took completely in her stride. She missed him, a little, but she was not grief-stricken. The main effect of it on her happiness was Aggy finding out that she had married Charles for money, which has bitterly shamed her. She has had various flings and lovers since, but nothing long term or serious.
