Lexi had been hard at work all morning, sorting a box full of books she'd managed to acquire recently. Many of them were very old and valuable - they had belonged to an old wizard who had been something of a collector. He had recently died, and his family had been completely unaware of the value of some of his books, and completely uninterested when Lexie had approached them, except in how much money she was prepared to pay for them. Lexie didn't like to con people, but at the same time she was a businesswoman, and in her opinion, people with no interest in old books almost deserved to be conned, so she had managed to buy them for something under their actual worth. Flourish and Blotts would probably sell them for over their actual worth, but that was none of her business - she was a buyer not a seller, and someone else would put the price on them. Her job was to sort them, carefully repair them if needed, value them and catalogue them in the record books. She enjoyed this work, and had spent a very satisfactory morning deep in the back rooms of the bookshop.
She was now in the Tamarisk Tree, preparing to have lunch, and wondering whether Ian might turn up. She had sent him an owl that morning, telling him what time she would be there for lunch if he had time to join her, but she hadn't been home since, so she didn't know whether he'd replied or not. She hoped he would come - she hadn't seen her little brother for quite a long time, and wanted to hear all about his new job, along with everything else in his life, which she considered she had every right to know.
Christmas was approaching and although it was cold and damp outside, the cafe had cheerful decorations and lights up, and all the shop fronts in Diagon Alley were lit up. Lexie wasn't hugely into Christmas - it was take it or leave it as far as she was concerned - but even she felt a little bit festive at this time of year. She'd already finished her Christmas shopping, though her presents tended to be more practical than decorative, and she wanted to ask Ian what his plans were for Christmas. She had a work 'do' next week, and a party planned at New Year, but nothing specifically for Christmas. However, she didn't really want to go to her mother's unless Ian was going to be there too...
She looked up as the bell at the door jangled and a cold breath of air entered the room, hoping that whoever coming in was her brother...
