CHARACTER info,
[atrb=vAlign, top]Natalia Evelyn Hayes was born on a stormy February morning, arriving a few days earlier than was expected. Being early is a trait that Natalia still has to do this - she's ever late for anything. Back to her birth... Tilly, as she was soon nicknamed, was the youngest and second daughter to her parents, Alex and Niamh Hayes. She has one older sister, Gabriella, and they are five years apart. Though she was born and raised in Ireland (at her mother's pleading since her father was English), Tilly's father insisted on giving her a proper English name (like he had her sister), firmly stating that he wanted his daughter to have a name that people could pronounce. Soon after she was born, Tilly joined her parents and her older sister at a place that she'd grow up to call home. They were a cute, happy family and the girls thrived in their environment.
By this time, Gabriella had already been showing signs of magic. Natalia, though she doesn't remember it, was very intrigued by any magic that was performed in front of her. She giggled and squirmed and smiled. By the time she was able to walk, Gabriella was already "too old" to play with a baby; she had her own group of friends and that was fine by Natalia. She thought her sisters friends were mean, anyway. They laughed at her and pushed her down and stuck things in her hair. Thankfully, however, the Hayes' lived next door to another couple who had several kids of their own. One of them, called Norah, was Natalia's age. Their mothers paired them up automatically and it was a perfect match; the girls were walking around, holding hands, at the end of their first play date.
Right before Natalia started primary school, she displayed her first signs of magic. She was overjoyed by her abilities and purposefully went about the house looking for things to test her magic out on. She was tempted to do it at school, but her parents had warned her not to or else she'd get her magic taken away from her. And Tilly did not want that to happen. She and Norah did magic tricks together, in the safety of either of their homes. The years continued much the same. Tilly became more aware of her magic and the events that might possibly lead to an outburst of magic. It took a little over a year for her to gain any sort of control over her magic.
Everything changed, however, when Tilly was eight. Her sister, Gabriella, was thirteen at the time... and pregnant. Tilly knew what pregnancy was and knew that a baby would arrive soon. What she didn't understand was why everyone was so upset with Gabriella for being pregnant. Every woman got pregnant, didn't they? So why did adults act disgusted with Gabby, and why wasn't she in school, and why did all of her friends stop talking to her? It was during this that Tilly became very protective of her sister. If they were walking the streets in their town and boys would call Gabby dirty names, Tilly would scream dirty and foul words right back at them. Out of everyone, she was the most excited for the baby to come. Then she would be an aunt! The day finally came for the baby to be born... it was late at night and Tilly was falling asleep in her sister's bed whilst they watched Ice Princess on the tellie. Gabby gripped her stomach, complaining of pains, and when she got up to go to the bathroom, her water broke.
Tilly remembers everything from that night. She remembers being at the hospital and waiting for her sister to bring life into the world. But she never saw her niece. Her parents collected her up in the early morning hours and brought their youngest child home. When Gabby came home the following day with no baby, Tilly couldn't stop asking questions. Eventually, her family told her that the baby had died. And so Tilly grieved the loss of the niece she never met, never questioning why there wasn't a funeral or a grave to visit. Never did a day pass that Tilly forgot her niece - even to this day.
The years after that seemed to pass excruciatingly slow. Tilly confided in Norah about everything. She and Gabby grew farther apart and by the time Tilly received her invitation to Hogwarts, Gabby had already dropped out of the school of magic. Tilly went happily, determined to make her life happy once more. She boarded the Hogwarts Express with Norah that September and never looked back. Hogwarts would change her. Tilly was sorted into Hufflepuff, whilst Norah was sorted into Gryffindor. The two remained best of friends, however, through it all. Of course, Tilly made new friends, but it was always Norah she trusted most and liked to be with the most. Between the two of them, Norah was more outgoing, which rubbed off on Tilly by the time the pair of them graduated.
All in all, Tilly's Hogwarts experience went well. She was a fast one with the boys, though. During the first term, the introverted Hufflepuff had kissed her fair share of boys. Truth be told, she felt more comfortable around them than most girls her age. The guys she chilled with weren't the ones she kissed, either. (Not yet, anyway.) Right before Christmas holidays, a fellow classmate asked Tilly to be his girlfriend. She accepted right away and then went home for the holidays. She never spoke to the boy again when they got back to Hogwarts. He didn't speak to her either. She wasn't crushed, though; there were other fish in the sea.
The first few years at Hogwarts all seemed to blend together. Tilly went through the everyday motions of waking up, getting dressed, breakfast, morning lessons, lunch, afternoon lessons, relax, dinner, homework, go to bed... and repeat. She was 12 when she did finally get a boyfriend who actually spoke to her. They went out for all of three weeks. After that, Tilly concentrated on her studies a little more than she had before. They were slipping and she didn't want her parents to get upset with her. But, boy, it was difficult to balance school, friends and a boyfriend. So she told herself that she wouldn't date until she was older and more mature. Surprisingly, Tilly stuck to that promise. Of course, because she hung out with guys, there was the occasional rumor that she was dating one of them. It was so absurd, though, that she had to laugh.
When Tilly turned 13, Gabby moved out of the house. Ever since giving birth to the baby and then losing it, she had been depressed and lifeless. But something had changed in her and she finally got her life on track. It was sad to see her sister go, but Tilly accepted it gracefully. Now she could invite friends over who didn't have to feel weird about having a gloomy person in the house, who locked herself away in her room. That summer, Tilly had her first taste of alcohol. It was something sweet that went down easy and she had drunk within minutes. She had been with Norah that night and crashed at her place, too dizzy to walk next door. The next morning, she woke up feeling worse than someone with the flu. Her first hangover... not a proud moment. But she was growing up and learning, so she accepted it.
Fast forward to fifteen-year-old Tilly. You know those boys she hung out with? Well, she finally started to go out with one of them. His name was Philip and he was tall and dark-haired and completely gorgeous. She shared her first proper snog with him. But their relationship was also more mature than from when Tilly was twelve. She didn't feel the need to constantly be with him or hold his hand. She enjoyed both things, of course, she was able to have time for everyone and everything she needed to have time for. When it came time for OWLs, Tilly knew she was ready. She sat 6 OWLs in total: Charms, Transfiguration, Herbology, DADA, Potions and History of Magic. She passed them all with either an O or E. She was very proud of herself. As a reward, Tilly's parents took her on a holiday for the entire summer. She got to chose where she wanted to go and picked Russia after much deliberation. They visited popular tourist sites, such as the Kremlin and the Hermitage and, of course, Alexander Palace. (Tilly's father is muggle-born, so muggle objects and stories and landmarks are not unfamiliar to her.) The summer was quite (for lack of a better word) magical to Tilly. She enjoyed it very much and went back to Hogwarts for her 6th year feeling more sophisticated. She and Philip continued to go out. During the Christmas holidays that year, they lost their virginity to each other. Tilly had never felt quite so close to someone before. The rest of her 6th year came and went. By the end of it, she and Philip were broken up. They still remained good friends, though.
By the time her 7th year rolled around, Tilly was ready for it. The only person she really interacted with that year was Norah. The rest of the time, she was too busy studying. NEWTs came and Tilly aced every one that she took. As a reward again, her parents took her on another holiday. Tilly, however, chose to go back to Russia. She went with her parents, though they only stayed for the summer. At some point during the holiday, Tilly had decided that she was going to live in Russia for a while. She didn't have a boyfriend back home (she did have a love interest in Russia) and Norah was in America. What was a better time to get away herself? Her parents supported her decision. Tilly got a low-paying job in a pub. She also struck up an intimate relationship with the above mentioned love interest. They lived together. It wasn't in the best part of town, nor was it particularly big, but Tilly didn't mind it too much. She stayed in Russia for a year, when she got a message from her family telling her that she needed to come home. Without even saying goodbye, Tilly left the country.
When she returned to Ireland, Tilly discovered that her sister had been diagnosed with cancer. It was aggressive and so her treatment would be as well. Gabby moved back into her parents house, as she was too weak to live on her own. Tilly got a job again in a pub and also started studying to become a psychiatrist in the wizarding world. She and Philip rekindled their relationship. They continued to be on and off for several years. As for Gabby, she went into remission much to everyone's disbelief. Tilly saw Norah every now and then when she came home to visit and, with each visit, she missed her best friend more and more.
When Tilly was 23, she fell pregnant. She and Philip had broken up two weeks prior to this discovery. They had always had issues, often stemming from the littlest things. It all seemed to be getting worse and Tilly was sick of the on-and-off thing. Philip wanted to get back together, but Tilly refused. She could have this child on her own. On her 24th birthday, she gave birth to a little girl whom she named Audrey Norah Hayes. (If she was going to raise the child alone, Tilly wasn't going to give her baby girl her daddy's surname.) As it turned out, however, Tilly needed more help with the baby than she had originally thought. She suffered from post-partum depression and had trouble taking care of her baby. Philip inserted himself into Tilly's life to help out with Audrey. Tilly's family encouraged her to get help that was what she did. After about five months or so, she was back to her old self. Philip stayed in the picture for a while longer, though eventually he and Tilly broke up once again.
One year later, Tilly was informed that Norah was pregnant. This excited the young mother and she begged Norah to please come home so they could raise their children together. A few months later, however, Tilly heard the bad news: Norah had miscarried. The baby was gone. She couldn't imagine the loss. Tilly missed Audrey so much it hurt sometimes when the little girl was with her father; she couldn't even comprehend what it would be like to lose her only child. Shortly after hearing the news, Norah returned to Ireland. Tilly did everything she could for her best friend - she even began to bring Audrey around after a bit. The little girl was only a few months over 1 year old, but she seemed to attach to Norah almost instantly. Nowadays, she refers to her as Auntie Norah.
Things seem to be going well for Tilly and Audrey at the moment. Tilly has a job with St. Mungo's as a psychiatrist. She works primarily with families, teens and kids; however she does have the occasion adult patient. Tilly and Philip are in couple's counseling. They have joint custody of Audrey. Gabby's cancer came back and she's currently going through treatments again. She doesn't seem to think she'll make it, though, because she recently pulled her sister aside and told her a secret... the baby she gave birth two nearly 20 years ago... she never died. She's alive, somewhere in the world. She was given up for adoption. The news threw Tilly for a loop, but since she has found out, she's been on a mission to find her long-lost niece.
By this time, Gabriella had already been showing signs of magic. Natalia, though she doesn't remember it, was very intrigued by any magic that was performed in front of her.
