Dearest Lily,
Happy birthday! You're sixteen now, and that means that you can do whatever you want. Or nearly. I bet lots of people are saying that they can't believe that you're sixteen already, but I can believe it because I've been living with you for the past five years and I can assure you that you're the most sixteen-y-est (terrible grammar) lady I know of. I've not got any money at the moment so no presents from me but if you want you can sort through my clothes and see if there's anything you fancy taking. Some of them are too small now and you're thinner than me, so.
I haven't seen you all day so far - I'm sure you're off being a fabby-dabby prefect somewhere - but I'll catch you later and we can have a bit of a party? In the dormy, maybe? I lied when I said I hadn't bought you anything, I forgot - I bought you a big iced cupcake and I'm going to take a gander around the school now and filch a candle off someone. We can sing you happy birthday, it'll be sweet. Or if you want, we can go out, but if not it can be like a slumber party. Totally cool.
Lots and lots and lots of love, Shelly
