[rs=2] | miss georgia caroline devereux was born on the 21st of april in the year 2001, to richard and anne devereux. it was a very inconvenient time for anne to give birth, as the devereux families were expected to attend a rather exclusive easter bash, but georgia paid no mind to that, insisting on coming out about thirty minutes before midnight, much to four year old henry's annoyance, as everyone was so busy fussing over georgia and their mother that nobody was paying any attention to his wish to go outside and see the fireworks that the local youth group were setting off in commemoration of easter; a situation that resulted in him running through the ward to find a window that met his standards to watch the fireworks from. despite the reasonable havoc that arose when he could not be located, little georgia caroline slept soundly through it, giving everyone the misguided preconception that despite her rather untimely birth, she would be an absolute angel. she wasn't actually named georgia caroline until the following day; she was simply known as 'the baby'; something that would no doubt have disgruntled her, if she'd been aware of it and capable of processing that information. richard had suggested caroline in honour of one of his great-aunts, and had compromised with his wife, settling on georgia caroline; georgia in homage to anne's own mother, now deceased, and caroline due to the aforementioned great-aunt. georgia was the second child of richard and anne, the fifth grandchild of richard's parents, and the third of anne's. richard devereux was born into upperclassman wealth; his family was able to trace their ancestry back to the first settlers of australia, and even further back into france. the family was very proud of this lineage, and all of them could give an informative - if arrogant and horrifyingly boring - lecture on it. anne van den elzen, as she was known before her marriage to richard, was a tall, slender, beautiful, fashionable, perfectly mannered woman, whose family, while being of dutch origin, had made their fortune in australia during the gold rush and were now amongst the same class as the devereux family. it was indeed via a gala that a mutual friend of richard and anne hosted that they met. anne, while not actually working herself, had a mind for business that attracted richard's attention when a lighthearted debate had sprung up at the gala between some self-proclaimed wonders of the business world, and anne pointed out flaws in both sides of the argument, before devising a far superior solution. recognising true intelligence and savvy when he saw it, richard introduced himself - more out of protocol than anything else; as a devereux, he expected that everyone that mattered knew who he was, and she certainly seemed to be the type to matter - and quickly struck up a conversation with the intent to approach her about employment, but instead recognising in her a blazing potential to be the perfect wife for him. by the time of their wedding, anne was unofficially working with him - she wasn't on the job roster, but everybody who mattered knew that she provided as much for the company as he did. his parents adored anne, especially in contrast to his brother milton's wife, billie, a rather dim-witted british girl with no skills besides childbearing and singing, and somehow even less decorum. naturally, the rather snobby members of the devereux family thought disdainfully of her - even milton seemed to find it difficult to stomach her company for too long. in comparison to them, richard's marriage to anne was considered perfect. there was no true passion in their marriage, true, but neither were unhappy with it, each knowing they had made a fine match and not really having any other prospects. four years after their first child, henry, was born, was georgia's birth. she already had four cousins and a sibling to try to shine amongst - henry, obviously, as well as arthur, xavier and lucette devereux on her father's side, and amelia, the daughter of her mother's elder brother, matthew. georgia didn't spend much time with her maternal family - her father had informed anne of the magic in the family when henry was born, and as her family, while being wealthy and reasonably upperclass, were muggle through and through, it was decided to keep the kids away as much as possible in case they witnessed accidental magic. as she grew older, georgia saw the strain it put on her mother's relationship with her family, and began to suspect some underlying resentment her mother had towards her husband for it, but her fears have never been realised, as her mother never displayed any open animosity toward richard; whether that was because it didn't exist or because anne was too well-bred to display such feelings towards her husband, georgia does not know. however, the decision to keep the children away from the van den elzens was probably quite a smart one, as georgia ended up displaying her accidental magic for the first time by jumping into a small lake in the grounds while escaping the nanny, but instead of falling into it, sliding over the liquid surface as if it was solid. thankfully, her father arrived home before the nanny could notice she was missing and he convinced her to come off of the pond and in return, he'd give her chocolate mousse, which remains one of her guilty pleasures today. she was four years old. she doesn't remember eliza's birth - the only relative whose birth she does remember is camille's, as she was five then. she doesn't remember awfully much, just all of them crowding around a cot and staring at a smiling pink baby. she does remember, however, when camille was born, that lucette and xavier flew away with uncle milton to england, which, according to her father was a dreary place. georgia always found it odd that her australian uncle would fly away to england with some children and leave his english wife alone in australia with others, but always dismissed it as an oddity of her uncle milton. she loves her uncle milton because he's a good uncle, but she's never been wholly convinced that he's a good father - she doesn't really remember him being around for her cousins when she was growing up, but her mother taught her that it wasn't her place to ask, and her curiosity dissipated over the time it took for her to embrace the aspect of her personality that dictated that she ought to do whatever she wished, as she was a devereux, and therefore, of the very best. growing up, georgia was not a particularly academically-minded child. she was intelligent, and she wasn't lazy, as many children in her position would doubtless have been, which is why her lack of academic motivation baffled tutors on occasion. she did in fact enjoy reading from time to time - her favourite books were muggle fiction, preferably classics, but exceptions could be made for books that had a character nearly as exceptional as herself. for several years, she refused to entertain the notion that any character could have brilliance equal to or above hers. this was a combination of the fact that reading was hardly her most actively pursued interest, with so many activities on hand, and the fact that most of the material she was given to read were classics that had been read by some person among the previous generation of assorted family members who had appreciated literature. in all of her perusing of books, the only story that could really be described as for "children" - which georgia never really thought of herself as, simply because she wasn't in the habit of labelling and therefore limiting herself - was that of artemis fowl, the impeccably dressed, dark-haired, blue-eyed young irish genius. he was a character she heartily approved of (despite his being irish, something she found distasteful due to their accents that always struck her as awfully common), and up until she was sixteen, she sub-consciously measured up each possible romantic prospect against artemis fowl ii, all of whose qualities she could admire, even if somewhat grudgingly as she wasn't accustomed to admiring many people. around the time she was sixteen and a half and had rejected a boy's invitation to a school ball on the basis that he didn't appreciate the majesty of the impressionist painting they were studying briefly in muggle studies, she had realised that while a good sense of culture and art was always a desired quality, she had been measuring up most prospects against her favourite childhood anti-hero for years. the series remains to this day the only remotely 'child-like' books she has ever divulged in, preferring instead either epic tales of fantasy and political intrigue, or unassuming looking books that housed tales designed to probe at one's beliefs and philosophical values - none of which georgia ever even entertained changing, but still enjoyed the books that could challenge her thoughts. of course, she was still the best. unbeknownst to her, she was shaped by those books. by willing herself to keep to herself by sheer force of will, she sub-consciously adopted threads of thought from the books she read and wove them into her own beliefs, most of which would have been shaped by novels, films and her family, as well as a wide knowledge of media, politics and how they affected each other as well as the lives of both people of the same class as georgia, and simple peasants. after her cousins moved away when georgia was five, the ones that remained - eleven year old arthur, three year old evelyn and newborn camille - became more important to georgia, as she was exposed to them more than before, though still not as often as a more affection-based family. evelyn was often thrown with eliza on the rare occasions that the cousins would mingle and anne had felt eliza's behaviour to be good enough that she be permitted to interact with others, as they were close in age, which suited georgia just fine because as much as she liked her cousin evelyn - or at least, would grow to like her - georgia was a five year old and it wouldn't do to be constantly straddled with a three year old, not even a fellow devereux. instead, georgia spent her time either showing affection to eliza (and evelyn by association), albeit patronising affection, sticking with henry or with her parents. henry was often to be found with arthur if they were with their cousins, though not often, as arthur was attending the magical school by that point, so as a result, henry and georgia spent a lot of time together and grew to be very close. of course, they both loved eliza very much, and as siblings go, the trio had a grand relationship, due to their parents' lack of hands-on parenting. georgia and henry love and respect their parents very much, though georgia is aware that their younger sister has a somewhat different opinion of their parents. despite georgia being closer to eliza in age than henry, georgia spent much of her childhood considering her brother her best friend, due to their close proximity and relationship. it wasn't that georgia and henry deliberately excluded eliza... it was just that horse-riding was much more difficult for a two year old than for an able nine year old and a wilful five year old. henry went off to school the february after xavier did, and six year old georgia was forced to find another to keep her occupied. she rode, as most of her family did, but she spent more time in the library as her father worked or at the boutiques with her mother. while she enjoyed the tales of princesses nearly as fine as she - though she rather detested their inclination to wait for things to happen; if one had the power to make what they wanted to happen happen, then they ought to do it. the devereux family weren't huge on delayed gratification - she was easily fed up with the library and oft-accompanied her mother on shopping trips. georgia fell in love. she adored the way the indigo satin married with the violet gossamer, the way silk felt beneath her finger tips, how the soft cotton could feel on her skin and how wool could be so thin yet trap so much heat. she was completely enraptured by the art of design, and how certain cuts looked extraordinarily difficult but the seamstresses that tailored her mother's clothes assured her were simple once one grew accustomed to it. georgia was from a family full of well-dressed people, but her taste was impeccable. while anne still tended to select the clothes that her children wore, especially eliza, georgia was allowed a free reign over her father's credit card when it came to her own clothing. even at the young age of seven, she knew what looked good on her - everything - and what looked divine on her - again, everything, except with her own georgia-flair. eliza also began mimicking georgia's behaviour, which made georgia slightly suspicious of her intentions but soon shrugged it off when she realised that eliza was getting into trouble less. when henry came home for the summer, georgia insisted that he told her everything. she felt large pangs of jealousy when informed that he was getting close with his older male cousins, and as a result, paraded eliza around the house a lot as her follower during that summer. georgia did, however, have a deep-set affection for her baby sister, though she wasn't sure that her sister realised. the years passed with georgia getting closer to both of her siblings and going further with her love of fashion, even going so far as to approach her mother's seamstresses with sketches of her own designs to be created. there was no doubt in anybody's mind that georgia was going to grow up to be one of the most glamorous women to ever be part of the devereux clan, which was a very high standard. when georgia was nine, lucette's side of the devereux family came back to visit during their summer, which was henry's, xavier's and arthur's winter break. georgia had no such restraints as school and thus was present for the entirety of their stay. she'd originally stuck with henry, but as he was so caught up with xavier and arthur, she soon turned to lucette, with whom she struck up a quick friendship, despite the two year gap. due to their reasonably similar personalities and interests, the two got along like a house on fire, and lucette remains one of georgia's closest friends to date. georgia's tenth birthday fell in the autumn term break, and her party was set in the middle of the break. georgia wasn't actually too fussed about her birthday - well, by her rather high-maintenance standards, anyway - as it marked another two years until she could go to wizarding school with her brother, but it was still a day that was especially all about her, so she was relatively keen for it. she was dressed in a silvery dress that she'd designed herself, and she was very proud of it, especially the geometrical cut around the collar. she couldn't wait to show lucette when she next saw her. however, she'd never get the chance, as eliza blew up her rather elaborate seven-tier cake all over the guests in a quite explosive display of accidental magic. anne was furious. she sent eliza up to her room, and poor eliza would have had no company at all if henry and georgia hadn't elected to go up and spend their days with her. that winter, the family went to england to visit their cousins for their summer. henry couldn't stay long, and nor could xavier or arthur, as their winter break was only three weeks, but georgia stayed for lucette's entire summer with her father and eliza, while their mother elected to return to australia in order to accompany the boys back to school. this was repeated the following year, when georgia was eleven and preparing to start school in australia the following february. she and lucette went shopping for new school gear for both of them and for just general fun, all the while swapping stories of their respective lives in the year since they'd seen each other. the following february, an eleven year old georgia, armed with a fifth year henry, sixth year xavier, seventh year arthur, sketchbook and far too much self-importance for a young girl boarded the train to the australian wizarding school. to say she instantly fit in would be a blatant lie. she was instantly noticed, though fitting in was a quite different matter. she was high-maintenance, incredibly choosy about who she would even deign to be within close proximity of, and above all, utterly convinced of her own superiority. despite her worldly travels and her rather extensive knowledge and skillset due to tutors and the library, georgia was a rather sheltered girl when it came to interacting with others. of course, she was a main attraction at galas her parents threw or attended, but there was a distinct difference between being fawned over by older patrons for one's charm and being judged by one's peers. there was nobody that she considered to be on the same level as herself - other than her relatives - and so she classed people into categories: intolerable, tolerated from a distance, tolerated within ten metres, tolerable, acquaintances. in her first year, she had no true friends. she had people that admired her and respected her, and some that hated her, but no real friends. she couldn't say that she minded. she was still easily the most popular girl in their year, even though she was hardly the most well-liked. still, even with her low opinion of everyone else and rather self-absorbed nature, she was a charming and charismatic person - and beautiful, even at eleven/twelve - and people did tend to like her to some extent, if grudgingly. in her second year, she turned thirteen and was suddenly noticed by boys. actually, they'd always noticed her, but the older ones appeared to have limits - such as preteens being not okay - and she was suddenly one of the most sought-out girls in the school. of course, being a devereux, she thrived on the attention, but she refused to indulge the boys by actually agreeing to date them - she was above them. still, they tried. it was around july that year that she noticed a quidditch teammate of her cousin xavier's - robb white. he was, she was astonished to discover, like her. he was well-dressed - not as impeccably as her, but honestly, who was? - and handsome, as well as being charming and utterly certain of his own superiority over others. she developed stirrings for him. not actual feelings - she was georgia devereux, and he could be as handsome as he liked, he wasn't worthy of her feelings - but something that she would inwardly refer to as a georgia-thing, refusing to utilise a word as infantile as 'crush'. besides, she was far too dignified for a crush. because of this dignity and pride, she utterly refused to chase after him because she was georgia devereux, and a devereux did not chase. she was often asked out by many males in her own year up to even sixth year, but she refused each and every one of them. it soon became a sort of unwritten challenge for the males at her school - as if she was a game to play and the ultimate respect would be the winner's prize. by the time she was fourteen, midway through third year, she spent more time with designs than with people, much to the chagrin of boys. she had, in the years past, accumulated a few friends, but nobody she was particularly close to. then, in her fourth year, that changed. a british boy named jaime carmichael transferred to her school from hogwarts, lucette's school. he absolutely aggravated her from the first day. they were forced to sit next to each other by a demonic ancient runes professor. he took one look at the name on her book and remarked, "oh, god, are you related to lucette devereux? not another one." georgia was so miffed that he'd dare insult her cousin and family in such a manner that she set his socks on fire. this began a feud between the two that would quickly become famous throughout the school. he would charm all of her books to say georgia devileux and she would charm his hair bright green. he would hex her so only bubbles would come out of her mouth, and she'd hex him with a particularly low blow that her brother had taught her, that ensured him to be, ah, painfully stiff for a few hours. they couldn't stand each other. until one day, she found him in the charms corridor, tears streaming down his face. now, georgia can be wicked, and snarky, and cutting. she is most certainly self-absorbed and high-maintenance. but she is still a good person. she sat down next to him and stared at him. the tears didn't stop flowing. she, rather awkwardly and completely grudgingly, snaked one arm around his shoulders and pulled him in slightly, making sure not to let his wet face or tears touch her shirt - it was new. they just sat there, as the story poured out from his lips - when he was younger, his muggle mother had contracted a form of cancer, and had been given nineteen months to live. she'd survived longer, giving him hope, but her condition continued to deteriorate. she'd sent him to live with his halfblood father in sydney, which was why he was attending here, and he'd just received word that she'd died, and he hadn't been there. as all of his grief poured out into the open air, georgia felt numb. she couldn't imagine anything like that ever happening to her - it was too large and whenever she tried to imagine his pain, it felt suffocating and she stopped. that was the first time georgia devereux ever felt that she didn't entirely deserve all she had. some point during the time the feud had begun, georgia had accepted a date from a young man in her class named nathan witherspoon. they had been on four dates, and while georgia wasn't particularly chuffed by them, the boy seemed to think he'd finally cracked the ice off of georgia devereux. unbeknownst to her, he'd been telling people that they'd had sex and that he had taken her virginity - that would be true if they'd had sex, but she wouldn't even entertain the notion of doing anything intimate with someone such as nathan witherspoon. at a party in september of that year, georgia was shocked to find a drunken nathan being egged on by his friends to take off her clothes... and him complying with their wishes with a cocky smirk. or at least, he attempted to. jaime carmichael intervened, shielding georgia from the drunken buffoon with his body. he and georgia hadn't talked or continued with their feud or done anything since that night in the corridor, but georgia felt an overwhelming rush of gratitude to the taller boy, and decided that he was worthy of being her friend. they became best friends. they still bickered like cats and dogs and he sometimes called her stuck-up and she sometimes called him ruder words, but they loved each other to bits and had each others backs. after georgia graduated, she was accepted into aifd (australian institute of fashion design) in which she completed the two year advanced diploma of applied fashion design & technology. upon graduating, her mother, henry, jaime and her cousins encouraged her to apply for an internship at alexander mcqueen. knowing they were very exclusive, she was absolutely over the moon when they accepted her. in her ecstasy, she kissed jaime, who had been living in england for the past year but had flown back to visit georgia. georgia had, inwardly, been absolutely mortified that she'd behaved with such little control, as well as beyond devastated that she may have lost the one true friendship she shared with someone she wasn't related to. however, she was a devereux and had been raised to show no untoward emotion when saving face was required, and she put on a smile and moved onto her sister, kissing her on the cheeks. thankfully for georgia, jaime wasn't fooled in the slightest. if he had been, she may have missed out on the greatest opportunity of her life - to be with the person she trusted most in the world. he took his sweet time doing it, though. after offering his apartment for her to stay in with him whilst carrying out the internship in london, he either didn't come home or brought home a girl each night. this made georgia livid; she couldn't believe the utter lack of respect he was paying her by choosing the company of some common slut over her, as well as the intense jealousy that made her want to scream in frustration. finally, she did. it was two and a half weeks since she'd moved in, and his sixteenth girl. when he opened the door with a blonde girl on his arm - she told herself that she wouldn't be so vexed if all of the girls didn't look like cheap imitations of her - she glared at him, slammed the door in his face and sat down at the table. a few infuriatingly long minutes later, he entered, sans georgia-lookalike, and wearing an amused expression that made her want to fling something at his head. after some arguing, they somehow ended up kissing and then having sex on the table. the following morning, she was absolutely horrified. not that she'd had sex with jaime - she was pretty sure that there was nobody else in the world she'd rather have lost her virginity to - but the fact that she'd lost her virginity on a table. admittedly, it was a beautiful mahogany table, but still. however, the arguing and the sex seemed to fix them. he woke her with the sweetest kiss she'd ever had in her life, and she decided that if anybody was worthy of being with her, it was jaime. as time passed, she began to count herself incredibly lucky to have him. she sometimes wonders if they love each other because nobody else would ever put up with them, or because they'd never put up with anybody else, and at the end of the day, she thinks it's a bit of both. the year after georgia had graduated, her sister had gotten involved with georgia's former classmate and all-around-jackass, jonathan palmer. georgia had advised her against it quite forcefully and evelyn had discouraged it, but eliza remained with him. something happened, though, and jonathan took off like a kite. as soon as lizzie graduated, she left the home. that was around the time georgia moved to london with jaime and after henry had moved to england. henry and georgia received letters from lizzie every once in a while, and they decided to find her. using some tricky magic, contacts at the ministry, money and intense focus, they tracked her down. she sobbed into them all night, and it reminded georgia of the night she and jaime had started the journey to be friends. they never spoke of it again, but it changed them all. it cemented their bond, and it let them all know that they'd always be there for each other. always. now, georgia's having an absolute blast with her internship. it suits her wonderfully, and she's really blossomed under the tutelage of experts. she and jaime have a very steady relationship - she always imagined being with a man that treated her like an absolute gem, but jaime doesn't, and she loves him all the more for it. he doesn't treat her badly - he just treats her as if she's human and calls her out on things, just as they did as friends. she prefers the bickering to fawning any day. he's the only person that has ever made her question her utter superiority over all - he's the only person she'd ever consider being as good as her, family excluded. |
