samuel has only entered the lives of the parker/archers as of recent and is utterly besotted by his gorgeous wife ruth. he means well but all three of the parker/archer children dislike him intensely. jovial and a tad patronising, he's a bigwig at the ministry of magic and has brought their lives from barely scraping by to a posh manor in the countryside and parties almost every weekend.

ruth has had a pretty miserable life so far; she was brought up in a rough neighbourhood with a single mum who didn't have much money and her mum died just after she left hogwarts. she worked in pubs quite a lot and had her first child to a man who left her after he found out she was pregnant. her next two children were to a terribly vulgar, lazy, arrogant man who was barely around and often left them for long periods of time. when he finally left for good, she struggled with each of her kids, all of whom are facing their own demons, before marrying samuel, mostly for the lifestyle he could provide them with. ruth may have made quite a few mistakes but she's very good at heart and simply wants the best for her children.

joshua is the closest child to ruth, and her first-born, although at twenty-six he can hardly be classed as a child any longer. he's eight years older than his brother william and twelve years older than his sister lara and when he was younger fell very easily into the world of gang life, despite the fact that he was always very bright and charming. he was slotted straight into gryffindor when he got to hogwarts and at around fifth year he pulled his socks up and started getting excellent grades. he was the one who sent his brother and sister's no-good father away after he left school and for the past six years he's been in america, working as a wizarding lawyer. he's back in england now, seeing his brother and sister for the first time since they were children.

william was the second-born, eight years younger than his brother josh, and he loved his father, bobby, despite the fact that he was totally unfit as a father, and his brother, josh, more than anyone else, never properly connecting with his mother. he grew into something of a wildchild, very loud and passionate and confident and charismatic, and very much in the shadow of his older brother, who he sees as the loved brother, the better brother. will misses his father bobby terribly and raged at his mother when she started dating samuel and eventually had them all move in with him, drinking and partying harder than ever before. eventually he was kicked out of the house, and travelled to his father's, although his father wasn't pleased to see him, either. he now lives with his best friend neil pereira and his older sister jade pereira, is terribly angry with his brother josh for leaving him and is desperate to be there for his sister, lara.

lara archer's known for being quiet, and people who know josh or will would probably be surprised that they were related to her. she takes after her mother quite a lot in that aspect, often shielding her emotions from people and rarely talking, although not because she's shy - her being quiet is a conscious decision, and she'd hardly deign to talk to most people. she'd never liked her father and was quite glad that he had left, but she loves her mother and brothers immensely, although she's been let down by both of her brothers - josh by leaving her when she was eight and not returning until now, when she's fourteen, and will for promising never to leave her and then moving out. lara's generally quite difficult to work out and she's never really had any friends apart from will's dog, leggit, who died the year previously. she fits well into the life of samuel hawes, unlike will, attending all of the parties and appearing the perfect lady at every single one, although she's quietly disdainful of samuel.
