Luke was absolutely fast asleep, breathing deep and relaxed. Despite his near-constant state of anxiety at the fact that he and Gavi could literally become parents any day now, he had finally managed to drop off about three hours ago, curled up protectively around Gavriella in their bed. The due date had been a couple of days ago with no baby forthcoming, and every hour past it had had Luke even twitchier than before. He simultaneously just wanted to get it over with and was reluctant for it ever to happen because this was it, the final stepping stone before his and Gavi's life changed forever.
If he wanted to get it over with, he could only imagine what it was like with Gavi, who was living with all that weight to carry around. He had been feeling rather helpless for the last couple of months, wishing he could do something to ease her burden but knowing he was unable.
Moving a little restlessly now, he rearranged himself on the bed in his sleep, his face pressing into Gavi's hair, one hand moving to rest lightly on her belly. Growing still again, he dropped back into a much deeper sleep, worries for the moment calmed.

The first trimester, even the second trimester, had been easy enough for Gavi to get through. She didn't even start to get a bump until her fourth month and even then it didn't grow too big. That had been concerning for Gavi (what if the baby was developing abnormally?), but her OB/GYN had assured her that many first-time mothers experienced the same thing. It all depended on the woman and her body. Everything was going smoothly, though, despite Gavi's odd cravings and emotional instability.
The third trimester had come and that was when Gavi began to get anxious. Three more months until she would be a mother... then two... then one... and then the due date came and went. Again, Gavi's OB/GYN had assured her that that, too, was normal. Many babies missed their due date by a few days. Maybe it had only been a few days, but now everything she did, she did with extreme caution. She didn't even want to go out in public in case her water broke in the middle of Diagon Alley or some busy muggle street. Gavi was beginning to think that maybe she was going to remain pregnant forever. Each day seemed to pass extremely slowly and she was nervous and jittery most days. She just wanted this baby out of her. Luke seemed to be the same way, though he never stopped being supportive. He was always there for her, even if she was snapping at him for something out of his control.
Today had been a little different. Gavi had felt under the weather and she'd spent the day, moping around the house and watching really bad soap operas. She'd had a few stomach pains, but nothing that she was too concerned about. Her OB/GYN had warned her that her body would prepare her for birth by sending out contractions every now and then - but she'd know when the real ones came. Sighing, Gavi opened her eyes. She'd been trying to sleep for the last hour or so, and she hadn't been able to. Luke was somewhat restless next to her, but then he fell back asleep after a few moments. It was then that Gavi felt the pain in her stomach get worse. It was like a menstrual cramp, but intensified. She held her breath, gripping the bedsheets, until the pain subsided. She tried to fall back asleep, because these pains had been coming and going all day (not so strongly, though), but then another one came. When it ended, Gavi reached over to gently shake Luke awake.
"Luke," she said, suddenly becoming very nervous. "Luke... I think I'm having contractions."
((ooc: sorry its so long! i had no idea how to get to that point, hahah.))

Luke was stirred out of deep sleep by Gavi's sudden tension, but didn't fully come to until he felt her hand shaking him. He woke up rather slowly, blinking sleepily at her, until suddenly her words hit him and he shot upright, looking panicked, hands flying all over her as his brain went into overdrive.
"Oh my god," he exclaimed, throwing back the covers and almost falling out of bed, tripping over a pair of shoes as he shot around to her side of the bed, "Are you okay? How long ago was the first one? Did your water break? Do you feel okay? How bad are they?" He kept babbling away as he reached her and helped her up from the bed, remarkably gently considering how frantic the words coming out of his mouth were, and enclosed an arm around her waist to help her out of the bedroom and down the stairs.
"There, you're okay," he promised breathlessly as they made it to the hall, snatching up the overnight bag they'd packed earlier in the week for today, "It's okay, come on, the car's ready and waiting out front, we're going to be fine, are you okay? How bad are they?"
Still reeling from the magnitude of it all, Luke only just managed to get the door open to reveal the car he'd purchased to get Gavi to the hospital - unwilling to apparate or floo her in this condition - waiting on the pavement for them. "Okay?" he asked again, glancing down at her.

All at once, everything began to happen. Suddenly, the universe seemed to come to life itself and it was moving too fast now. Gavi heard Luke ask her questions, but she couldn't respond. In her head, she answered them easily. No, five minutes?, it must have been that super long pee I had last night, no, have you ever had someone stab you in the groin and twist the knife around, mashing up your insides? Well, she was still snippy, so that was a good sign... still, it all so shocking. Was this what it felt like to be in shock? Was she in shock? She couldn't be! She was going to have a baby.
"Oh my god," Gavi said aloud as she realized what this meant. Her eyes went wide. She felt Luke picking her up and they went down the stairs. She didn't know how her legs were moving; nothing felt real. Until another contraction ripped through her and she dug her nails into Luke's skin. She didn't scream, she didn't say anything. She wasn't sure she could. (Besides, she didn't want to look like one of those crazy women on television.)
Again, she didn't respond to Luke. She let him lead her through the house and out the front door. Gavi looked up at him and shook her head. "No," she admitted. "But there's nothing we can do now."

Luke was so hyped up on adrenaline he barely felt Gavi's nails digging into his skin, and didn't even notice the red crescent moons they left behind when she pulled them away. All he could focus on was her next to him and the fact that their baby was on its way and, wow, nobody mentioned what a mess his head would be in when this moment finally came. When she spoke, telling him she wasn't okay, Luke was already halfway to piling everything into the boot of the car, throwing the bags in higgledy-piggedly and slamming it down tight on top.
He went over to her then, pausing in his frantic hurrying for a moment to take her head gently between his hands, gazing down at her with all the calm he could muster at such a frazzled time. "Gav," he told her gently, pressing a kiss delicately to the end of her nose, "It'll be fine. It hurts but... but, just think, by tomorrow we'll have our baby." Suddenly slightly overcome with emotion again, Luke just about managed to choke out, "I love you so much," and then hastily turned to help her into the car.
The second she was in, he pelted around to his own side, vaulting the corner of the bonnet, and shot into the driver's seat to set off at a highly illegal speed towards the hospital. As he drove, he glanced over at Gavriella every few seconds, worried for her more than he could hope to put into words.

Gavi's eyes followed Luke as he made his way to the back of the car and started loading it up. She stepped out of the house, though her hand rested on the side of the house to keep herself steady. She didn't think Luke had even heard her - he was in his own little world - but then he was in front of her, holding her. She stared up at him and nodded. He was right; they would have their baby tomorrow. It was so exciting.
Gavi didn't have time to reciprocate her feelings and she didn't think Luke would mind. He knew that she loved him. If she didn't, she wouldn't be here right now. She wouldn't be having his baby. Gavi was seated in the passenger side of the car one moment and the next, they were barreling towards the hospital. Each inch they crept closer to their destination, the more nervous she became. She was gripping the edge of the seat - and that was probably a good thing because another contraction came.
"Oh my god!" Gavi said loudly. She looked at Luke, finally realizing just how fast he was going and she narrowed her eyes, the pain of the contraction lessening - but it was longer than the rest. "I don't know if you realize - or care - what it's like to be a human incubator, but it's not fun or exciting like everyone seems to think. So if you get us pulled over because of your insane driving and I start to go into labor, shit's gonna hit the fan. You're going to wish you'd never bought this damn thing. I am not having this baby without drugs - are we on the same page?" She barely registered that she was snappy at him; it was just beginning to hurt and, well, he was the closest thing to her....
