OVERALL PERSONALITY:
ainsley doesn't put up any walls to hide who she is or pretend that she's something she's not - most of the time, unless she's using you for something, what you see is what you get. however, another slytherin trait she has is her manipulative nature, but because it's one of the few things that she hides so well, not a lot of people can recognize when she's utilizing it. for example, she's friendly with basically everyone in her year, even people that everyone else considers to be rude or bitchy. though she makes sure to keep herself on good terms with everyone in case she'll need them for something one day, she secretly dislikes a lot of people she knows for the little things that they do, which she knows is childish, but she can't help it. a lot of this manipulating game wasn't initially planned by her, since people have naturally been drawn to her since she started hogwarts and most of her yearmates respect her as it is - but sometimes she puts that small amount of extra effort in to making people happy for the span of a few seconds just by saying a simple "hello" or throwing them a smile so they'll remember her in the future.
though ainsley doesn't hide who she is, deep down she's quite insecure about herself and her abilities and harbors a huge second best complex - if one of her friends says something about how much they like her, on the outside she'll accept it with joy but on the inside she'll be overanalyzing their comment and putting herself down by assuring herself that that person is better friends with someone else than they are with her. because of this internal reaction and insecurity, she can never feel good about herself when it comes to people complimenting her, whether it be on her looks [she doesn't consider herself pretty at all] or her friendship. this is also why she's always so determined to do her best in her classes - because her intelligence is her one constant that she knows that no one can ever take away from her and rarely can anyone ever beat her at. on the contrary, sometimes she puts herself down for being so smart as well, which sounds strange, but she feels negative about it occasionally because she thinks that other people have such practical talents that they'll be able to use in the future, like quidditch and general athleticism, art, writing, music, etc. she almost wishes that she had something other than just school that she was really good at.
a key concept to her personality is wondering why she got sorted into gryffindor - people ask her on a regular basis why she didn't get sorted into ravenclaw for her intelligence, or slytherin for her ambition, or even hufflepuff for how hard she works to get what she wants. even she considers herself a better fit for any of the three above houses when compared to gryffindor, which she's grown to love but still doesn't understand how or why she got sorted there when she has a limited number of gryffindor traits.[/ul]

OVERALL HISTORY:
time passed, but over the next year, ainsley still couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that she had lost her mother at such a young age. she was very lost and very sad, but moreover, her sisters had been even younger than her when their mother had died, which made her feel guilty about her own sorrow somehow. since then, ainsley has never looked back when it comes to always being there for her two sisters. she did whatever she could to console them, care for them, and make sure they didn’t feel like they weren’t alone. she didn’t realize it at the time because she was still merely ten years old and was doing as much as was in her capability to protect her sisters, but looking back at it now that she’s a lot more mature, she sees those few darker years in their lives as her stepping in and filling her mother’s role. she showed her first signs of magic during this depressing year in her life, angrily breaking a glass vase that was sitting on the dresser of her room with magic when one of her distant aunts came in and tried to give her “friendly” [but actually quite condescending and insensitive] advice on how to cope with her current situation.
her motherly instincts and general protectiveness over her sisters became an even more prominent part of her life when her father began to date other women. he tried to keep it as secretive as possible, but his actions didn’t escape ainsley’s inquisitive notice for long. she didn’t tell her sisters, knowing that they either wouldn’t understand or would be even angrier than she was upon finding this out, but kept it all built up inside, also stubbornly refusing to confront her father about it for as long as possible. sadly, her attempt to keep her sisters in the dark for their own good failed, as she walked in on a furious raegan who had just discovered their father kissing another woman [which was also the time that raegan showed her first sign of magic by blasting the two apart to different ends of the room, and ainsley was secretly rather proud of her sister for doing so, even if it was an accident of magic]. he got rid of that particular girlfriend immediately when he saw how upset his daughters were. however, ainsley still tried her best to act like an adult regarding the matter, explaining to her raegan that technically her father wasn’t cheating on anyone because their mother wasn’t in the world anymore, and that maybe he needed to see other people so he wouldn’t feel so lonely.
ainsley’s words of what she then thought of as wisdom came back to haunt her when she realized that her father being with other women in their home was certainly not a one time occurrence - she walked in on the same thing time and time again when she was eleven, it being a different woman nearly every time since their father had begun to swap girlfriends on a monthly basis. this frustrated her to the point where she snapped and full out screamed at her father one night. he took her yelling in stride, seeming to perfectly understand how she felt. she bought it, but as she watched him over the next few weeks, she saw that much to her astonishment, his reckless behavior and apathetic attitude towards his children hadn’t changed at all. thankfully enough, she received her hogwarts letter soon later, which she was excited beyond words about, though she felt selfish because she so desperately wanted to get away from the rickett house [which, just a mere year and a half ago, had felt like a proper home] and leave her sisters to deal with their father’s complete disregard for how his daughters felt about the women he accompanied himself with.
ainsley found it quite strange that the sorting hat was conflicted on whether to place her in slytherin or ravenclaw, since she’d always thought that ravenclaw would be the most fitting house for her. because of this premade notion in her mind, she was extremely shocked when she was placed into gryffindor at the last minute, almost feeling cheated - as if the sorting hat couldn’t decide on one of the two best choices and had thus just placed her in a random house. she sulked over that for a good few days, but all in all, she was just happy to be a student at hogwarts - it had both gotten her away from the bitter and uncomfortable atmosphere at home because of her father’s antics and it also gave her a place to shine and let her intelligence have an outlet through all of her classes.
although ainsley’s social skills had never been as strong as raegan’s, she didn’t have much difficulty making friends during her first year. she became friendly with most of her yearmates early on in the term, keeping good connections with as many people as she could. she also came to realize that not everyone at hogwarts was as smart or as mature as her, especially in the years that followed when everyone her age was busy gossiping about who fancied who while she was busy writing to her youngest sister at home to make sure she was alright and worrying about her even if she said yes. since raegan was in her first year at hogwarts by the next year when ainsley was in her second year, she could look after her much easier, even though her sister had been sorted into hufflepuff like their father.
when she was in third year, she began to note changes in her sister’s behavior. at first they were subtle, but since she knew raegan so well, she knew that they meant something. she guessed without any doubt that raegan was trying to get the attention of their father, who of course didn’t take any notice of her at all. she quickly grew concerned and asked raegan about the slight changes in her personality, but not to much avail, as raegan shrugged it off as nothing and told her sister not to bother her about it anymore, so she had no choice but to do just that. this was also the year that ainsley came to the conclusion that sexism was an actual thing - there were certain things that guys were able to do that girls weren’t without getting called names and being made fun of, which she didn’t think was fair. moreover, there were other things that guys thought that they could always do better than girls and thus girls shouldn’t even get the chance to do, which makes her even more upset because she doesn’t understand why gender should matter when measuring someone’s ability, whether it be their intelligence or athleticism or anything else [other than biological differences that give women and men different genes that cause differences between sexes and whatnot].
for example, there was a discussion going on in the gryffindor common room one evening that she just happened to walk past on her way to her dorm. after overhearing a bit of the conversation, which consisted of a group of older guys talking about how an all womens’ professional quidditch team like the holyhead harpies shouldn’t be allowed because females aren’t that good at the sport anyways, she couldn’t help herself from jumping in, finding their general ignorant and misogynistic way of thinking completely outrageous. she still jumps into debates such as these as quickly as she did that night when it comes to matters of women deserving equal privileges as men, and sometimes she doesn’t even do it on purpose - she’s just so passionate about the subject that she goes on the defensive automatically when she hears someone disagreeing with her, even if they’re older and come off as more mature. following this incident, she also became interested in reading the newspapers that arrived in the great hall by owl every morning, affiliating herself with the current news and events of the wizarding world as much as she can.
at the start of fourth year, ainsley watched her youngest sister be sorted into slytherin and was very proud of her, simultaneously being glad that she was at hogwarts now and didn’t have to be alone with their father during the school year anymore. on the other hand, she began to observe more drastic changes in raegan’s behavior as the year progressed, such as her taking up habits like drinking, smoking, and snogging. any type of sense she tried to put into her sister’s head was a failure and a waste of time and energy, because raegan seemed determined to do whatever she wanted without any fear of the consequences. at first, ainsley was desperate to figure out why her sister was behaving the way she was, but it didn’t take her long to realize that it was her way of begging for their father’s attention, which they both knew she wasn’t ever going to get. she still worries about raegan on day to day basis, constantly hearing rumors around the school about all the things she’s involved in, but besides strongly advising her sister to get her act together [which only seems to encourage raegan more to continue on her current path] there’s not much she can do to stop it.
fourth year was also the year that ainsley started to notice boys in a different light, since before then she’d always seen them as competition in academics [she still does, but her view has just changed slightly in that she finds some of them quite attractive and others not so much]. she’s friendly with a lot of guys - she naturally gets along way better with them than with girls, but that doesn’t mean she thinks all girls are petty or anything like that. currently, she’s never been in a relationship or even been kissed, and though she sees a lot of the people in her year doing those sorts of things already, it’s not exactly at the top of her priorities list. she goes by the philosophy that if something like that is going to happen, it’ll happen when the time is right and she can’t force it to happen faster, because she’s not very outgoing in the flirting department. it also doesn’t help much that she refuses to attend parties or events where she knows there’ll be drugs and alcohol, because she’s not really interested in that stuff at all. she’s fancied a few guys in the past year, but not enough to actually make her feelings known, since a lot of them have been her good friends. additionally, she’s mainly attracted to guys that she either thinks are way out of her league or are just the complete opposite of her - easy-going, partiers who aren’t all that worried about their marks. since she’s always attracted to guys that she can’t have, she believes that doing anything about it is just pointless because it will end in embarrassment for her.
