Dear Lucy,

This letter isn't exactly the easiest for me to get out and it's not for the reasons you think, either.

I know I've been slightly distant lately after your whole announcement, but that's because I wanted your mum and dad to sort things out with you before I even attempted to step in. You know your gran doesn't quite do subtle - I wasn't made that way, but nonetheless, I think I've been silent enough.

Lucy, I don't care if you like boys, girls, rocks, animals - it doesn't matter. None of it matters because you are my granddaughter -- and though you have it in your head that I don't love you as much as Molly because she shares my name, I love you.

I'm here for you whenever you need me, Lucy. Come hell or high water, and the same applies to all of my grandchildren, children, children inherited through marriage and what not.

You're all family, and family means that we stick together.

Take my words for what you will love, but know gran loves you.

I'm sending you some sweets, and a new jumper.
