I WALK THIS EMPTY STREET
Personality
DISLIKES: Prejudice, boredom, losing touch with his family, big cities, flying, little girls in slutty outfits (it's one of the bees in his bonnet - he thinks it's awful when very young girls are made into sex objects), not being able to sleep, losing his temper with his family, people not listening, bad manners, tea cups (why would anyone drink tea out of something you can only fit one finger through the handle of?), firewhisky (he just prefers Muggle drinks), custard, sleeping in
LIKES: Spending time with family and friends, new things, interesting facts, open-mindedness, muggle magic tricks, making people laugh, adventures, excursions, experiments, sight-seeing, toast and marmite, empty beaches, respect, warm cider made with real apples, writing poetry in the early hours of the morning, swimming, cold water, ball point pens
BAD HABITS: Fidgeting, not paying sufficient attention, losing concentration, biting his nails, getting irritable, not sleeping at night, not eating regular meals, spending too much time at work, telling embarrassing jokes in front his children's friends
GOOD HABITS: Telling jokes, making people feel welcome and accepted, always apologising after losing his temper, organising impromptu trips, always tipping a little bit more than he needs to
WEAKNESSES: His wife and kids, has trouble paying attention all the time and concentrating for long periods, gets overenthusiastic and carried away, generally sees the positive sides of an idea but not the negative, avoids things he finds unpleasant, is no good at talking about feelings, gets stressed and irritable easily, suffers from insomnia at times
STRENGTHS: Good sense of humour, very fair, understanding, open-minded, positive thinker, quick reactions, excellent memory, creative thinker, determined, hard worker, keen to make people happy
PERSONALITY: Dennis has changed a lot from the excitable little boy who arrived at Hogwarts dripping wet and dressed in Hagrid's fur coat (although it is a claim to fame he still talks about, that his life was saved by the giant squid before he had even been sorted). Many things have happened to change him; the war, his brother's death, falling in love, becoming a father, a successful career as an Auror... However, as much as anything, it is called growing up.
Not that that excitable little boy isn't still there in Dennis, and in fact, it often seems to be the uppermost part of him. He still retains a child-like fascination with new things, as well as a love of tricks and jokes. He is not really a prankster himself, although he appreciates them when other people play them; he is more likely to say funny things than to play tricks – he has an extremely witty and sharp sense of humour, although he often delivers his jokes in such a deadpan way that other people take a few minutes to realise he was joking, which has occasionally got him into trouble. He has always had difficulty concentrating for long periods of time, and although he is much better at this than he used to be, he still has the tendency to be somewhat easily distracted, which means that he can often forget things. He tends to be very enthusiastic about things, especially new things, and to throw himself into whatever he does.
Perhaps one of the biggest struggles in Dennis' life has been the attempt to live up to other people; he always worries that he is not as good or as clever or as funny as others, and feels inadequate and tries to keep up, which quite often leads him to fail where, if he had just done things his own way, he might have succeeded. This tendency has, of course, lessened as he has got older, although it still there underneath. And of course, the untimely but heroic death of his older brother meant that Dennis had lot to live up to. It also meant that both Dennis and his parents tended to see the time before Colin died through rose-tinted spectacles, when they were the perfect happy family (in reality, they were indeed a happy family, but they were about as perfect as any family, which is to say, not at all) – Dennis has always wanted a family of the sort he remembers his own being when he was a child, which is unfortunately a little unrealistic, and that is typical of Dennis; he holds unrealistic expectations, of both himself and other people.
There is also a far more serious and thoughtful side to Dennis than the enthusiastic funnyman. The things that are really important to him in his life, he clings to, whether that be the people he loves, the memories he cherishes, or his ambitions – when it comes to those things, he is capable of being very determined. He is fiercely loyal and brave, and would risk everything to stand up for something he believed, without a single second thought. He is dedicated to his job, sometimes to te point of over dedication, and he is loving and generous and kind. However, his mood can change quite quickly; as a young child he was easily wound up, and these days, he can get irritable and angry quite easily; he doesn't mean to, and he tries to keep it under control, but sometimes he just snaps.
He is not the strictest father, but he does hold certain expectations of his children; he wants them to become good, decent human beings with a strong set of principles and a sense of self-worth. He feels, however, that he is better with younger children, and struggles to know what to do with older ones. He understands that teenagers need a bit of leeway, but he is also beginning to realise that perhaps his lenient approach has simply led to a distance between him and his children, as he has more or less let them get on with it.

HISTORY:
Dennis Creevey comes from a completely non-extraordinary family. His father, Declan, was a milkman and his mother, Maureen, ran a nursery. Both were loving, warm parents, somewhat shy people outside the family, but completely the opposite of that within it; they played games and told stories and jokes, and his father was an expert at performing magic tricks to entertain his children (later, Dennis performed magic tricks to entertain his father). Their boys were their pride and joy.
Dennis was two years younger than his brother Colin, and as a child, he looked up to his brother as everything that was wonderful in the world, and he was lucky in that Colin was an excellent big brother, who didn't mind Dennis tagging after him. In fact, they were best friends as well as brothers. Neither of them was the most popular kid at school, but it didn't matter, since they had each other.
If Dennis had started school in the 21st Century, rather than the 1980s, he might well have been considered for an ADHD diagnosis during his early years; he bounced all over the place, from one thing to another, both mentally and physically. He was easily wound up, and his concentration was poor, but from an early age, he had a quick and sharp sense of humour and an eagerness to please that made him likeable.
Both Creevey brothers knew from an early age that they could do strange things without meaning to; Dennis' magic appeared when he was eight years old, and his teacher unfairly kept him in at breaktime for writing a rude word ('bum') on the desk, when actually it was the boy sitting next to him who had done it. Steaming with the injustice of this, and frustration that the teacher wouldn't listen to him, Dennis accidentally made the offending word disappear, so that when the teacher fetched the caretaker to see if he could get it off, it had gone. Dennis was still sitting in the classroom, and to this day can remember his satisfaction at the teacher's confusion and the caretaker's amusement. He was in no doubt as to what had happened, since Colin's magic had been showing for three years, and in fact, Colin had a surprising amount of control over his magic, and could occasionally do things deliberately. Dennis rushed home proudly to tell his brother that he could 'do things' too. Colin was delighted, and informed his brother solemnly that he'd been thinking about it, and he thought that they must both be wizards. However, neither of their magic ever really showed at home. A young witch or wizard's accidental magic usually seems to come when they are feeling some strong emotion, or when their life is in danger, and the Creeveys' home life was comfortable, loving and relaxed, so there was no real reason for it to show at home; their parents, therefore, were unaware.
That meant that when a strange woman turned up with Colin's Hogwarts letter, the Creevey parents were much more surprised than their sons. They were proud though, although somewhat dismayed at the thought of their little boy going away from them to school. However, Colin was pleased and excited, so they gave in. Dennis cried all night because Colin was leaving, and for the next two years, he hoped and prayed that he too would get a letter. Colin wrote to him (Dennis was extremely excited to get letters via owl) every week, telling him everything that was happening at Hogwarts, which only stoked Dennis' desire to go there too, and to meet all the people Colin talked about, like the wonderful and mysterious Harry Potter, who Colin informed him during his first Christmas holidays, in tones of awe, had saved the world from a dark wizard when he was only a baby, and was now attending Hogwarts, just a year above Colin and in his house.
In due course, Dennis' letter came too. His parents were sad to think that they would lose their younger son too, but Dennis' excitement and joy were such that they were resigned, and saw their sons off on the Hogwarts Express with a wave and a smile. Dennis' typical over-excitement led him to fall out of the boat on the way across the lake; something fished him out and pushed him back in, and the large giant-like man with them gave him a huge furry coat to wear. Dennis was so determined to enjoy everything about this new world, however, that he simply saw this as a great adventure.
He had been hoping to be in the same house as Colin, and he was, but over the next couple of years, he began to grow away from his childish hero-worship of his brother. Not that they grew less fond of each other, or that they got on less well, but Dennis began to see that being exactly like Colin might not be quite what he wanted in life. Colin had trouble making friends, while Dennis, although he shared certain characteristics with his brother, had much better natural social skills, a good sense of humour, and became quite popular in his year. Colin was the clever one, with all the elaborate theories, who was made a prefect in his Fifth Year, while Dennis was a livewire and quite often in detention; he also became the class clown, with a reputation for making everyone laugh which his teachers didn't always appreciate. He was beginning to grow out of his early inability to sit still and concentrate, although he would always be fidgety and easily distracted.
In his Second Year, Dennis joined Dumbledore's Army with his brother (breaking the rules by sneaking out to Hogsmeade for the first meeting), and was excited by the thought of getting to fight the Dark Arts, although if he was honest, he wasn't entirely sure whether or not he believed that Voldemort had returned. However, by the end of that year, nobody had any doubts, and Dennis was proud to have been one of the few who had made a stand with Harry Potter. This gained him quite a bit of prestige in his year, as he was the youngest person to have been in the DA.
Life was soon to get much darker though. Shortly before he should have been starting his Fourth Year, both Dennis and Colin received letters informing them that they would not be permitted to return to school that year. Their parents, who had only had the vaguest ideas of what was going on, were extremely upset, and insisted on being told the whole story. They were very worried and frightened by it, of course, but proud of their sons for standing with the right side. Colin and Dennis did not go back to school that year, which meant that it was difficult for them to know what was going on in the Wizarding World. Eventually, Colin managed to get in touch with some ex members of the DA who had already finished school, as well as a couple of other Muggleborns he knew. Several of them, particularly those who were over seventeen, had already received the orders to go to the Ministry and give up their wands, and Colin and Dennis knew that it was only a matter of time before they too were given this order. In the meantime, though, Colin became involved with a movement to help other Muggleborns to escape; their parents knew what he was doing, and although they were afraid for him, they agreed that it was something he needed to do. Dennis, however, they said was too young to be involved, much to his fury.
Eventually, Colin and Dennis were both forced to go on the run themselves, although Colin managed to successfully cover their tracks so that their parents were not targeted. It was a hard and frightening time, during which they slept rough and went hungry a lot of the time. Dennis has extremely mixed memories of that time, since it was possibly the most difficult few months of his life, but it is also the last memory he has of spending time with his brother, and after they had drifted apart in the last few years at Hogwarts, he is glad that they had the chance to strengthen their bond again.
They both used their galleons to stay in touch with other people in the Wizarding World, as well as tuning into Potterwatch as often as possible, and they received the message the Weasley twins sent out that the battle was being joined at Hogwarts. They both went to fight, but when they got there, were told that all underage students were being evacuated, and as neither of them were seventeen, that included them. They left via the secret passage, but when they reached the Hog's Head, Colin announced his intention of sneaking back. First of all Dennis wanted to go too, but Colin would not hear of it; then he tried to dissuade Colin, but to no avail. Colin simply repeated 'I've got to do it – I'll be fine,' several times, and vanished back towards the school. It was the last time Dennis would see his brother alive.
Colin's death in the battle is something that Dennis will probably never entirely get over; it is something that changed him and changed his life. He will always measure life in 'before' and 'after.' It also almost broke his parents. His mother went to pieces, and it's the only time Dennis has ever seen his father openly sobbing. However, although their little family would never recover, and there would always be a Colin-shaped hole in it, it also drew them even closer together. His parents doted even more on their remaining son, and Dennis developed a serious side that may have been there all along, but it took this tragedy to bring it out. He knew that his parents only had him now, and he took his duty as their only child seriously. He was determined to make them proud of him, as proud as he knew they would have been proud of Colin one day, for Colin had been clever. Not only that, but he was determined to continue the fight against the dark forces that had killed his brother.
He returned to school, to take his Fourth Year a year late, and although he found it very lonely and strange without Colin's presence, Dennis began to reshape his life. He also began to work hard for the first time in his life, because he had developed the ambition to be an Auror, and he knew that he needed excellent grades. His teachers, impressed by the change they saw in him, encouraged him. It was not that the old Dennis had gone, it was just that he had grown up a lot in a very short space of time.
Dennis was made a prefect in his Fifth Year, despite his reputation as the class comedian and a lasting tendency to be easily distracted and excited, and with a lot of hard work achieved the results he needed, both in OWLs, and later in NEWTs. He was accepted onto the Auror training programme, with a recommendation from Harry Potter himself, who was by then a senior Auror, and took his training very seriously.
He had had several girlfriends during his final three years in school, but it wasn't until afterwards that he met the woman who was to be the love of his life. At least, he had known her in school, but they were in different houses, and moved in different circles, so they had had little to do with each other. Their romance was nothing either dramatic or classic; they met through a mutual friend, whilst in a pub, got talking, and then owled each other a few times before agreeing to meet up for coffee. Dennis never expected, at that stage, that within a few months, he would be head over heels in love with her.
They went out for two years before taking the decision to move in together, and it was another year before he got round to proposing to her. They were still young, but she accepted, and followed her acceptance up with the news that she was pregnant. Dennis was delighted, and when, some months later, he first held his baby son in his arms for the first time, he felt as if a hole in his heart that had been there ever since Colin had died, was finally filled in. (At the time, Dennis' mother Maureen had recently taken up genealogy as a hobby, and had discovered that although the family had lived in Burnley for generations, the name Creevey came originally from a Gaelic name, which resulted in the Scottish Gaelic name Lachlan being chosen for their firstborn.) They married when Lachlan was three months old, because Kathleen didn't want to look pregnant in her wedding photos, and they were extremely happy, although Dennis could not help wishing that Colin could have been there to be his best man. Two years later, Ella arrived, and with his career progressing well, Dennis could honestly say that he was very content with life.
Not that his married life has been entirely blissful; in some ways, he is not an easy person to live with, and these days, he finds that he becomes irritated and loses his temper quite easily; he always feels bad though, when he loses it with his wife or children. Two years ago, he was promoted to the rank of Senior Auror, something that he was proud of, but which meant a lot of late hours and distraction. He knows that he wasn't spending enough time at home; he knew it at the time, and felt bad about it, but felt that it couldn't be helped. He is beginning to see now that perhaps he should have helped it, because both of his teenage children seem more like strangers than they ever did before. However, nobody was more pleased than Dennis when his wife informed him that she was pregnant again last year. It snapped him out of his workaholic phase, and now that the baby's birth is imminent, he is determined to be a better father and husband...
